忙しいばかりで礼がない
按摩（あんま）は夜昼暇がない
急病見舞いは棒（ほう）図がない
臆病（おくびょう）者はそばへは寄りつかない
にんにく燻（いぶ）さぬうちはない

鰯（いわし）の安売り買い手がない
水屋（みずや）は水道をなぜ汲まない
屋台の立ち食いして（食うしか）がない
商人（しょにん）の顔色つやがない
弔い（とむらい）昼夜途切れない
小屋（こしや）の掛け値値切らない

長屋の牛売（ぎゅうし）は計りがない
損料（そんりょう）長くて間に合わない
かみさん嘆きで意気地がない
息子のぼんたはしだらがない
娘は十二でまだ生えない
親父に別れて頼りがない

とうとう売られて客がない
見上がりするにも銭がない
かかる因果なものはない

やがて世の中つつがない

**Concerning the Population Register (Ninbetsu-chō)**

"Hey, wife — saying 'I wish I were dead' is all well and good, but get up already!"
(A wife has lost her husband before her)
The landlord delivers the last rites for the destitute.

Oh, there is nothing — nothing — no way around it!
No stopping the spread of disease,
Dead in an instant from cholera — no time to feel shocked,
There's no one who hasn't hanged themselves at eight o'clock,¹
There's no one who wants to die,
Even so, there's no helping one's fate,
The doctor can't make it in time,
Nothing but bustle — no reward,
The masseur has no rest, day or night,
No limit to the visits for the suddenly ill,
The cowardly won't go near,
There's no [house] without garlic being smoked.²

No buyers for the cheap sardine sale,
Why doesn't the water seller draw from the waterworks?
Nothing to do but eat standing at the food stall,
The merchants' faces have lost their luster,
Funeral processions never stop, day or night,
The undertaker's inflated prices won't be bargained down,
The crematorium's ledger — no making heads or tails of it,
White funeral robes and ritual fees are not cheap,
No time even for a sutra — no time to sleep,
The grave-digger has no rest,
Not even enough characters to write the posthumous Buddhist name,
No land left to bury the dead.

The landlord has no time for a side job,
The tenement's cattle-trader has no scale,³
Rental goods — too long, can't be returned in time,
The wife grieves and has no spirit,
The son, Bonta, has no sense,
The daughter is twelve and still hasn't grown (teeth),⁴
Left behind by father, no one to rely on,
"Batchiri" (completely) taken, and no obstacles remain,⁵
The belly's "Poterin" (unborn child) has no father,⁶
Finally sold off — no customers,
No money even to pay outstanding rent,⁷
There is nothing as wretched as this fate.

Yet, the hard times will not last long,
Soon, the world will be at peace again.

Without even a thought of pity —
　　　The undertaker's inflated prices are something!
Ignorance is bliss (not knowing is Buddha) —
　　　What a fine way to let off steam.
Those who attain salvation quickly —
　　　are the ones who become Buddhas.
Sending only the teeth to Kōya —⁹
　　　a fine occasion for it.
