二十八宿は四方にそれぞれ七宿ずつ配分されている。井・鬼・柳・星・張・翼・軫の七宿を朱鳥（朱雀）という。春の三ヶ月の間、南中天に見える。角・亢・氐・房・心・尾・箕の七宿を蒼龍という。夏の三ヶ月の間、南中天に見える。斗・牛・女・虚・危・室・壁の七宿を玄武という。秋の三ヶ月の間、南中天に見える。奎・婁・胃・昴・畢・觜・参の七宿を白虎という。冬の三ヶ月の間、南中天に見える。「中天」とは、夜の戌刻（午後7時〜9時頃）までに南方に見えることをいう。これら二十八宿はすべて東から西へ左旋（左回り）する。
暦学者の説によれば、（二十八宿は）西から東へ右旋して、およそ二万七千年で天を一周するとされ、改暦における歳差はこれに由来するとされている。
しかしながら、この説は誤りである。張子（張載）・朱子（朱熹）による明確な弁駁があり、後の文に示す。朱子は「星は天に貼り付いているのではない。天とは上にある陰陽の気である」と述べている。すなわち、天の蒼々とした部分はただ気のみであって、形や質を持つものではない。また「日（太陽）も星も（太陽の）光を受けている」とも述べ、さらに「星は日光を受けているかどうかと問われれば、星はおそらく自ら光を持っているであろう」とも述べている。これによれば、星は月のように単に日光を受けて輝くだけではなく、自己の光を持つものである。しかしながら、また日光を受けないわけでもないので、一方では「日光を受ける」といい、他方では「自ら光を有する」ともいうのである。全く月の光とは異なるものである。ただし、太陽の光とはまた別のものと見受けられる。

The twenty-eight lunar mansions (二十八宿) are distributed evenly among the four cardinal directions, seven mansions each. The seven mansions of Well (井), Ghost (鬼), Willow (柳), Star (星), Extended Net (張), Wings (翼), and Chariot (軫) are called the Vermilion Bird (朱鳥/朱雀). These are visible in the southern meridian during the three months of spring. The seven mansions of Horn (角), Neck (亢), Root (氐), Room (房), Heart (心), Tail (尾), and Basket (箕) are called the Azure Dragon (蒼龍). These are visible in the southern meridian during the three months of summer. The seven mansions of Dipper (斗), Ox (牛), Girl (女), Emptiness (虚), Rooftop (危), Encampment (室), and Wall (壁) are called the Black Tortoise (玄武). These are visible in the southern meridian during the three months of autumn. The seven mansions of Legs (奎), Bond (婁), Stomach (胃), Pleiades (昴), Net (畢), Turtle Beak (觜), and Three Stars (参) are called the White Tiger (白虎). These are visible in the southern meridian during the three months of winter. "Culmination in the meridian" (中天) refers to their appearance in the southern sky by the hour of the Dog (戌刻, approximately 7–9 p.m.). All of these twenty-eight lunar mansions rotate from east to west in a leftward direction (左旋).
According to the view of calendrical scholars, (the twenty-eight mansions) rotate rightward from west to east, completing one full revolution of the heavens in approximately 27,000 years, and it is argued that the precession of the equinoxes used in calendar reform originates from this movement.
However, this view is incorrect. Zhang Zai (張子) and Zhu Xi (朱子) provided clear refutations of this, which will be presented in the text below. Zhu Xi stated: "The stars are not affixed to the heavens; the heavens are the yin-yang qi that exists above." That is to say, the azure vastness of the sky is nothing more than qi and does not possess physical form or substance. He also stated that "the sun and the stars both receive (the sun's) light," and further remarked: "When asked whether the stars receive sunlight, I believe the stars likely have their own light." According to this, the stars do not merely receive sunlight and shine like the moon, but possess their own intrinsic light. Nevertheless, since they also receive sunlight to some degree, one account says "they receive sunlight," while another says "they have their own light." They are entirely different from moonlight. However, they also appear to be something distinct from sunlight.
