現代語訳

## 甲州身延山大地震

嘉永六年丑年（1853年）二月二日、朝の五つ時（午前八時頃）から暁の七つ時（午前四時頃）にかけて大地震があり、山も崩れるかと思われるほどで、人々は大いに驚き、転げまわりながら逃げ去る者が多かった。町の家々は倒れ、土蔵も数多く損壊したが、不思議なことに、尊くも御山（身延山）では御堂をはじめ奥の院に至るまで何事もなく、人々は夜明けになってようやく、ありがたいと安堵の思いをした。

▲ここに、下野国宇都宮宿でも同じく地震があり、その次第と、八丁の御城下では家が崩れ、石造りの蔵も数多く損壊したが、人々は無事であったとのことである。

これによって、諸国の人々に知らせんがために、一紙に綴り記すのみである。

## The Great Earthquake at Minobu Mountain in Kōshū (Kai Province)

On the second day of the second month of the sixth year of the Kaei era, the Year of the Ox (1853), a great earthquake occurred from the hour of Five in the morning (around 8:00 a.m.) until the hour of Seven at dawn (around 4:00 a.m.). It was so severe that the mountain itself seemed on the verge of collapsing. People were greatly alarmed, stumbling and rolling about as they fled in large numbers. Many houses in the town fell, and numerous earthen storehouses were damaged. Yet, miraculously, the sacred mountain of Minobu — from its main halls all the way to the Inner Sanctuary — suffered no harm whatsoever. By daybreak, the people felt profound relief and gratitude.

▲ It is also reported that an earthquake similarly struck the post town of Utsunomiya in Shimotsuke Province. In that castle town of eight chō, houses collapsed and many stone-built storehouses were damaged, though the people themselves were reported to be safe and unharmed.
