楚国の将軍である伍子胥が進み出て言った。「公孫后殿は文章を論じても題意を理解せず、鼎を持ち上げて席を離れることもできない。どうしてこの職に就こうとするのか」と言って筆を取り、答えて言った。
天は元来地に依り、地は天に依る 天地は皆五行の数に従って先んじる
河水は自ずから天上より降り下る 泰山は既に崑崙に発して原となる
土坤は尊んで五行の信を守る 人道は貴んで万物の完全性を成す
請う、この詩を挙げて六問を明らかにせん 篇々透徹して何の言葉もないであろう
答え終わって、片手で鼎を持ち上げ、諸侯の前を一回りして、また元の所に置いた。
子胥はついに明輔の職に就き、殿階の上に立って誓いを定めた。列国はそれぞれ宝を出して軽重を競い合って明らかにした。ただ楚国だけは宝を備えて来なかった。哀公が言った。「楚は大国なのに、どうして宝がないのか」子胥が言った。「我が楚は宝とするものがない。ただ善をもって宝とする。君は君たり、臣は臣たり、四民は業を楽しむ。誠に鎮国の大いなる珍宝である。どうして方寸の珠と比べられようか」哀公は理に服して答えることができなかった。子胥はまた哀公に告げて言った。「潼関の一路を見ると、強盗が相い阻んでいる。君よ護送させてください」と言って公孫后を連れて関を出たので、伏兵も敢えて犯すことができなかった。ひとえに伍子胥の功により諸侯を安んじ、おのおの辞謝して国に帰った。 五巻終

Wu Zixu, a general of the Chu state, stepped forward and said: "Lord Gongsun Hou discusses literature but cannot grasp the theme, and cannot lift the tripod to leave his seat. How can he take on this position?" Taking up his brush, he answered:
Heaven originally depends on earth, earth depends on heaven Heaven and earth both follow the precedence of the five elements
River water naturally descends from above Mount Tai has already originated from Kunlun
Earth respectfully maintains the faith of the five elements Human way values the perfection of all things
I request to present this poem to clarify the six questions Each verse is thoroughly clear, leaving nothing unsaid
After finishing his answer, he lifted the tripod with one hand, walked around in front of the feudal lords, and placed it back in its original position.
Zixu finally took the position of chief advisor and established an oath while standing on the palace steps. Each of the various states brought out their treasures to compete and display their value and worth. Only the Chu state came without preparing any treasures. Duke Ai said, "Chu is a great state - why do you have no treasures?" Zixu replied, "Our Chu has nothing it regards as treasure. We only consider virtue as our treasure. Rulers act as rulers, ministers act as ministers, and the four classes of people enjoy their occupations. This is truly the great treasure that stabilizes the nation. How could it be compared to a small pearl?" Duke Ai was convinced by this reasoning and could not respond. Zixu then told Duke Ai, "Looking at the single road through Tongguan Pass, bandits block the way. Please provide an escort." Taking Gongsun Hou with him through the pass, the hidden soldiers did not dare to attack. Entirely due to Wu Zixu's merit, the feudal lords were kept safe, and each gave thanks and returned to their countries. End of Volume 5.
