人数に決まりはなく、三人以上何人でも構いません。五十四枚の札を同じ数に分けて、お互いに見せないように持ちます。○最初に桐壺から花の宴までの札八枚と若菜上下の札二枚とを持っている人は初めに並べ置きます。○最初に札を分け与えた時、札の端数が出た時は桐壺から若菜まで十枚の札を持っている人に与えます。○さて、桐壺の札を持っている人から呼び出します。呼び名は自分の手にない名を何でも心任せに呼びます。その呼び名を待って、呼ばれた札を持っている人が出します。その続きの札があれば何枚でも出すことができます。その人が思いついた名を呼びます。右のようにして順番に、先に札を手払いした人の勝ちとします。○札を呼ぶ時、自分の手に持っている名を呼ぶ時は恥とします。

Instructions for Playing Genji Karuta Picture Matching Game
There is no fixed number of players - three or more people, any number is fine. Divide the fifty-four cards into equal numbers and hold them so that players cannot see each other's cards. ○Initially, whoever holds the eight cards from Kiritsubo to Hana no En and the two cards of Wakana Jō and Ge should arrange them at the beginning. ○When first distributing the cards, if there are leftover cards, give them to the person who holds the ten cards from Kiritsubo to Wakana. ○Now, the person holding the Kiritsubo card starts by calling out. The name called should be any name not in one's own hand, chosen at will. Waiting for that call, the person holding the called card plays it. If there are consecutive cards, any number of cards may be played. That person then calls out a name they think of. Proceeding in order as described above, the person who first gets rid of all their cards wins. ○When calling cards, it is considered shameful to call a name that you hold in your own hand.
