午前六時二十分の地震（ししん）は別（わけ）
て岐阜（ぎふ）名古（なこや）屋 大垣（おほがき）地方（ちほう）は
劇烈（げきれつ）なる地震（ししん）にて震動（しんどふ）
はけしく地（ぢ）さけ家倒（いへたおれ）
れ死人（しにん）何数人（なんまんにん）なるをしらべ
兼（かね）る程（ほど）にて且（かつ）出火（しつか）有（あ）り
水災（すいさい）をこふむる有（あり）て実（じつ）に
前代未聞（せんだいみもん）の事なりける
先（まづ）家（いへ）倒（たお）れ半身（はんしん）家（いへ）にひ
しがれ出ることならず其傍（そのかたはら）

今、明治24年10月28日の夜明け、午前6時20分の地震は、特に岐阜、名古屋、大垣地方では激烈な地震で、震動が激しく、地面が裂け、家が倒れ、死者が何万人になるか調べきれないほどで、しかも出火があり、水災害を被る所もあって、まことに前代未聞の出来事であった。
まず家が倒れて半身を家に挟まれて出ることができず、その傍らから火が移って生きながら焼け死んだ。また地面が裂けて半身を地中に埋もれて死んだ者もあって、不憫というのも言葉が足りないほどである。運行中の汽車は正常に動かず、乗客が不審に思っていると、進行を止めるか否かという状況であった。

Now, on the dawn of October 28, Meiji 24 (1891), at 6:20 AM, the earthquake was particularly severe in the Gifu, Nagoya, and Ogaki regions, with violent tremors that split the ground and toppled houses. The number of deaths reached tens of thousands, making it impossible to count them all. Moreover, fires broke out and some areas suffered flood damage, making this truly an unprecedented disaster.
First, houses collapsed and people were trapped with half their bodies pinned under the debris, unable to escape. Fires then spread from nearby, and they were burned to death while still alive. Others died with half their bodies buried in the ground when it split open. It was so pitiful that words cannot adequately describe it. Running trains could not operate normally, and while passengers were wondering what was happening, the question arose whether to stop the trains or not.
