There were about thirty collapsed houses (in Shiozaki village), and it was said that twelve or thirteen people had died instantly. From Shiozaki village onward, the ground fissures became smaller and conditions appeared somewhat less severe. Three ri further along, in the area of the magistrate's office of Kawakami Kingonosuke at Sakaki-juku, there were no collapsed houses or deaths, though walls and fittings had been damaged by the tremors, and the shaking continued dozens of times day and night, with the residents all sleeping outdoors. Three ri further into the Ueda domain, conditions were again somewhat lighter, though people were still sleeping outdoors day and night. Two and a half ri from there was Komoro town, and three ri beyond that, upon reaching the Nakasendō post station of Oiwake-juku, there was not even the sound of mountains rumbling. After the great earthquake, there were only occasional sharp tremors from time to time. Crossing the Usui Pass toward Edo from there, it was said that on the night of the 24th day (of the earthquake) there had been a considerable earthquake, but that there had been no earthquakes afterward.
The foregoing is a rough account of the natural disaster I witnessed and heard about in the course of my official duties. I believe that the details will be investigated and reported in due course from each respective location. Respectfully submitted.
