First, the Onmyō Tayū (陰陽大夫, the chief Yin-Yang master) performs a purification ritual (harae) of the body. [The procedure is as follows: a pair of small paper wands (kobei) is passed from the person wearing the purification robe (jōe) to the Onmyōji (Yin-Yang diviner); after the purification is complete, the person in the purification robe receives them back and returns them to the daikan (代官, official deputy). The said wands are to be prepared and supplied by the daikan. They measure one shaku two sun in length and two bu in width; the wand paper on all four sides consists of two sheets of Mino paper layered together, two kudari in size, approximately four bu in width. They are single-sided wands (katahei), in the style of the shide (zigzag paper streamers) of shimenawa (sacred rope).]
Next, offerings are presented on a sanpō (三方, a tiered stand): [five cuts of noshi (熨斗, dried abalone) placed on a small stand; five pieces of kachiguri (搗栗, pounded dried chestnuts) placed on a small stand; five cuts of kombu (昆布, dried kelp) placed on a small stand.] Three rounds of earthenware cups (kawarake) are served [two servings each for left and right sides]. One chōshi (銚子, sake pourer) and one hisage (提子, handled sake vessel) are passed to the left and right — no additional vessels are needed. Starting from the lower steps (kaishita), they are passed in order to the left and right. However, the first seat on the right, after receiving the offering at the tenth seat on the right, passes through the center between the left and right seats and carries it back to the first seat on the right.
Next, kachiguri (pounded dried chestnuts) [placed in earthenware cups, three rounds; the same cup is used as a lid] are passed to approximately twenty norijiri (乗尻, mounted participants) on the left and right. However, for the first seat on the right, they are passed from the tenth seat on the right side through to the end, and then passed back from the rear to the first seat on the right.
Next, the Uma-date (馬立) ceremony. [Two sasifumi (差符, written orders/passes), each placed on a wooden tablet (katagi), are carried to the designated place by two persons wearing purification robes, who serve in this role.]
Next, the O-umakai (御馬飼, horse-feeding) ceremony. [Upon completion of the Uma-date ceremony, two persons wearing purification robes stand side by side to the left and right at the location of the kiriage-ita (切板, a cutting board or designated board) and perform the O-umakai.]
Next, the norijiri of the left side rise from their seats and perform the temizu (手水, ritual hand-washing). [This is performed by the persons wearing purification robes, using two cuts of Yoshino sugi-hara paper (吉野杉原, a type of traditional Japanese paper) as temizu paper.]
Next, the right side does the same.
Next, temizu for those at the lower steps (kaishita). [First the left side, then the right side.] The same procedure is followed.
Once the above temizu is completed, the participants proceed from the chōya (庁屋, official hall) in a formal procession.
