当月二日亥の刻ゟ大地震にて天地くつがへる斗人家土蔵七歩通り崩れ其中より
所々出火にて死人怪我人数しれず出火卅八ヶ所の火口と相成候趣追々申来り候左之通

江戸大地震出火 本調べ
今月二日午後十時頃から大地震で天地がひっくり返るほどで、人家や土蔵が七、八割通り崩れ、その中から所々から出火して死人や怪我人は数知れず、出火三十八ヶ所の火元となった様子が次々と報告されてきており、以下の通りである。
浅草御厩河岸、茅町、瓦町、材木町、御蔵前、黒船町、諏訪町、駒形町、並木町、花川戸、山の宿、猿若町の芝居三軒すべて、今戸辺りから三谷、吉原残らず、田町、金杉辺り、下谷、上野広小路、御成街道、外神田、佐久間町辺り、御丸の内では四ヶ所出火、御大名・小名様方の過半数が類焼したとのこと、虎ノ門外、京橋前後、芝増上寺、神明も大損傷、深川一円、永代寺焼失、本所辺り、回向院、それから亀戸天神、柳島、小梅辺り、五百羅漢、築地御門跡、鉄砲洲、佃辺りまで焼失、愛宕下二ヶ所出火、芝口、高縄、泉岳寺、東海寺、三田、白金、目黒辺りも大損傷、伝通院、白山、根津、駒込、追分辺り、いずれも大荒れで死人怪我人おびただしく、右の外で人家の残った分もあるいは歪み又は半壊などで皆々野宿をしている様子。
地震はまだ揺り止まず候えども、出火は漸く四日午前六時頃鎮火した由。古今稀な大変の次第。昨晩四度目の追加報告で申し来たった本調べとしてお出し申し候。残りはなお詳しく後編にして差し出し申すべく候。

Great Edo Earthquake and Fires - Main Investigation
From around 10 PM on the 2nd of this month, there was a great earthquake that seemed to turn heaven and earth upside down. About 70-80% of houses and storehouses collapsed, and fires broke out in various places among them. The number of dead and injured is countless, with 38 locations becoming sources of fire. Reports continue to come in as follows:
Asakusa Umaya-gashi, Kaya-cho, Kawara-cho, Zaimoku-cho, Okura-mae, Kurofune-cho, Suwa-cho, Komagata-cho, Namiki-cho, Hanakawado, Yama-no-yado, all three theaters in Saruwaka-cho without exception, from Imado area to Mitsuya, all of Yoshiwara, Tamachi, Kanasugi area, Shitaya, Ueno Hirokoji, Onari Kaido, Soto-Kanda, Sakuma-cho area. In the inner palace grounds, fires broke out in four locations, with more than half of the great and lesser daimyo residences suffering from secondary fires. Outside Toranomon, around Kyobashi, Shiba Zojoji temple and Shinmei shrine suffered great damage. All of Fukagawa, Eitaiji temple burned down, Honjo area, Eko-in temple, then Kameido Tenjin, Yanagishima, Koume area, Gohyaku Rakan, Tsukiji Monzeki, Teppozu, extending to Tsukuda area all burned. Two locations caught fire below Atago, Shibaguchi, Takanawa, Sengakuji, Tokaiji, Mita, Shirokane, Meguro area also suffered great damage, Dentsu-in, Hakusan, Nezu, Komagome, Oiwake area - all suffered great devastation with countless dead and injured. Among the remaining houses outside these areas, some are warped or half-collapsed, and everyone is sleeping outdoors.
Although the earthquakes have not yet stopped shaking, the fires were finally extinguished around 6 AM on the 4th day. This is an unprecedented great disaster. This main investigation report came as the fourth additional report last night and is hereby submitted. The remainder will be presented in more detail in a later volume.
