忍ひ居水右衛門通りし処を遅しと待受たり森平は主人ゟ若党に
すへき由を再三いはれしかと曽て受ざりしか何と思ひけるにや此間は
忝由を申せは主人より刀給はり名を津右衛門と改此事伯父に聞せしにいか
計歓ひ重代の一腰を呉候を主人に見せけれは関和泉守の弐尺三寸の
氷の如くにて肝を冷し侍りし扨八日に水右衛門方の下女に白き下帯
二筋端縫を頼み九日の早朝主人の伽羅の油元結抔調へん迚出し
に不図水右衛門に逢候是はいつにかはり小野郎一人にて御下り心元なし
といひしかは水右衛門か云されは今朝殊外頭痛せし故五ツの番代りを
待兼同役に断をたて野郎か薬持来りしを幸に思ひ帰るとあれは
然は某按摩いたし療治参らせん抔戯れ供せしに水右衛門云其方
口入の芝右衛門家来の吉助は何共合点のゆかぬ脇さし也重て慮外
あらは打て捨んとあれは津右衛門いはく下〻誰しも同し事也只大目に
見給へといふ処へ吉助松陰より飛出て石井宇右衛門か忰半蔵也

老母がいるので急いで帰り、この由を申し通せよ。万一仕損じたならば両人に代わって母を養育いたせ。もし背くようなことがあれば七生までの勘当である」とあったので、「それならばこの上は力がない。さあらばこの所から一里ほどの、その所は松が生い茂りかけて現れがたい事なので、某が糧を持って行き相待とう。本意の上で先ずその所へ来てください。必ず必ず」とあったので、この事はもっともだとして、主人水右衛門方を一両日の暇を乞うて出て行った。
吉助は四月九日早朝に芝右衛門へ「昨晩お願い申し上げた通り、今朝五つ時に国元の者がこの駅を通った際に、しばしの暇をください」と言って出た。「まだ遅くもあるまい。髪月代をして行け」と言うので、いつものように夫々を調え、思っていた事を少しも色に出さず相勤め、それから堀の端松の木陰に紺の単物に大脇差で忍び居て、水右衛門が通った処を「遅い」と待ち受けていた。
森平は主人から若党にすべき由を再三言われたが、全く受けなかったが、何と思ったのか、この間は「かたじけない由」を申したので、主人より刀を給わり、名を津右衛門と改めた。この事を伯父に聞かせたところ、どれほど喜んだか、重代の一腰をくれたのを主人に見せたところ、関和泉守の二尺三寸で氷のようで、肝を冷やした。さて八日に水右衛門方の下女に白い下帯二筋の端縫を頼み、九日の早朝、主人の伽羅の油元結などを調えようとして出たところ、ふと水右衛門に逢った。「これはいつもと変わり小野郎一人でのお帰り、心もとない」と言ったので、水右衛門が言うには「それでは今朝殊の外頭痛がしたので、五つの番代わりを待ちかね、同役に断りを立て、野郎が薬を持って来たのを幸いに思い帰る」とあったので「それでは某が按摩をいたし療治参らせましょう」などと戯れて供をした。
水右衛門が言うには「そなたが口入れした芝右衛門家来の吉助は何とも合点のゆかない脇差である。重ねて慮外があらば打って捨てよう」とあったので、津右衛門が言うには「下々は誰しも同じ事です。ただ大目に見てください」と言う処へ、吉助が松陰より飛び出て「石井宇右衛門が息子半蔵なり

If you betray this, you shall be disowned for seven lifetimes," so [they said] "Then there is no other way. Well then, about one ri from here, that place where pine trees grow thickly and it would be difficult to be seen, I shall take provisions and wait there. After accomplishing our purpose, first come to that place. Without fail, without fail." Since this seemed reasonable, he requested leave from his master Mizuemon's household for a day or two and departed.
On the early morning of April 9th, Kichisuke said to Shibaemon, "As I requested last night, this morning at the hour of the cock, someone from my home province passed through this post station, so please give me a brief leave." [Shibaemon] said, "It's probably not too late yet. Get your hair and forehead shaved before you go." So he prepared everything as usual, showing nothing of his thoughts in his expression, performed his duties, and then hid in the shadow of pine trees at the edge of the moat, wearing a dark blue unlined robe and a large wakizashi, waiting impatiently for Mizuemon to pass by.
Moridaira had been repeatedly told by his master that he should become a retainer, but had never accepted. However, for some reason, recently he expressed his gratitude, so his master gave him a sword and he changed his name to Tsuemon. When he told his uncle about this, how delighted he was! He gave him a hereditary sword, and when he showed it to his master, it was a two shaku three sun blade by Seki Izumi-no-kami, like ice, which chilled one to the bone. Well, on the 8th he asked Mizuemon's maidservant to hem two white underbands, and on the early morning of the 9th, he went out supposedly to prepare his master's aloes oil and hair ties, when he happened to meet Mizuemon. "This is unusual - you're going back with only one page, how unreliable," he said, so Mizuemon replied, "Well then, this morning I had an extraordinary headache, so I couldn't wait for the five o'clock shift change. I told my colleague and am going home, fortunately the page brought medicine." So [Tsuemon] said jokingly, "Then I shall give you a massage and provide treatment," and accompanied him.
Mizuemon said, "That Kichisuke, the Shibaemon household retainer you recommended, has a wakizashi that makes no sense at all. If there's any more rudeness, I'll strike him down." Tsuemon replied, "Lower-class people are all the same. Please just overlook it." Just then, Kichisuke leaped out from behind the pine trees and declared, "I am Hanzō, son of Ishii Uemon!"
