そも〳〵是ニ奉掛一軸ハ
鹿嶋要之助地震ニ筆を取て
画せ給ふ一ぢく也天動七度地しん
古代より度々といへば頃ハ元禄
十六年十月廿一日のらりくらりとゆり始め
もうかんにん要之助大石ニ而取ておさへしか
近頃信州京都大坂の地しん【ひょうたんの図】なはなしの
やうに聞伝ひ此度之地しんニ大驚き
鮨てすべつて火事上る是等のうなき
すくわんか為要之助地しん筆尊像也
一度拝する輩家けう出精酒を鮨
なら家を鹿嶋と守る尊形也
霊寶ムハむくらり〳〵

現代語訳

そもそもここに掛けてある一軸は、
鹿島要之助が地震の際に筆を取って
描いた一軸である。天変地異、地震は
古代より度々起こると言えば、最近では元禄
十六年十月二十一日にゆらゆらと揺れ始め、
「もう勘弁してくれ」と要之助が大石で押さえたが、
近頃信州・京都・大阪の地震【ひょうたんの図】は嘘ではないような
話として聞き伝え、この度の地震に大いに驚き、
家が傾き滑って火事が起こる、これらの災いを
救おうとして要之助が地震を鎮める尊像を描いたものである。
一度拝む者は家が堅固になり、酒を傾けて
家を鹿島が守ってくれる尊い姿である。
霊宝は無限に功徳がある。

英語訳

This hanging scroll displayed here is
a single scroll that Kashima Yōnosuke painted
with his brush during an earthquake. Heaven and earth shake, earthquakes have
occurred repeatedly since ancient times, and recently in the
21st day of the 10th month of Genroku 16, it began to sway gently.
"Please, have mercy!" Yōnosuke tried to hold it down with a large stone, but
hearing tales of recent earthquakes in Shinshū, Kyoto, and Ōsaka【gourd illustration】that seemed all too real,
he was greatly shocked by this earthquake.
Houses lean and slide, fires break out - to save people from these disasters,
Yōnosuke painted this sacred image to calm earthquakes.
Those who worship it once will have their houses strengthened, and drinking sake,
this is the sacred form of Kashima protecting homes.
This sacred treasure brings infinite merit.
