贈権僧都兼好は、すでに没して三百有余歳、今に至るもその書はいよいよ賞され、その名はいよいよ輝いている。残念ながら、その事跡の完全な記録を見ることはできないが、それでもなお幸いなことに、園大暦（えんだいりゃく）があり、これによって証することができる。また旧事紀・諸家記録・兼好家集・吉野拾遺・磧礫集などの諸書に依拠し、ここより採り、かしこより輯め、綴り、次（つ）いで、一小冊となした。

これを号して「兼好略伝」と曰う。かの至徳を慕うがゆえに、僣越の罪を忘れてしまった。まことにそのとおりである。

Kenkō, who was posthumously granted the title of Provisional Superintendent of Buddhist Monks (*Gon-sōzu*), has now been gone for more than three hundred years. Even to this day, his writings are increasingly admired and his name shines ever more brightly. It is regrettable that a complete record of his life and deeds cannot be found. Nevertheless, we are fortunate that the *Endairyaku* exists, by which such matters may be verified. Relying also upon such works as the *Kujiiki*, various family records, the *Kenkō Kashū* (Kenkō's poetry collection), the *Yoshino Shūi*, and the *Sekirekishū*, I have gathered materials from here and there, compiled and arranged them, and assembled them into a small volume.

This I have titled *Kenkō Ryakuden* (A Brief Biography of Kenkō). It is out of admiration for his supreme virtue that I forgot the presumptuousness of my undertaking. Such is indeed the case.
