On the 21st day of the 7th month of Kansei 4 (1792), the Year of the Rat, at around the Hour of the Snake (approximately 10 a.m.), a fire broke out near Kōkaibashi in Azabu. With a fierce south wind blowing at the time, the fire spread and consumed the residences of Lord Kamiya Tōbei, Lord Saiki Kangoemon, Lord Toda Gorōzaemon, Lord □□ Hachirobei, and others. From there it spread to the residences of Lord Abe Bungo-no-Kami and Lord Date Tōtōmi-no-Kami, then leapt to the Nabeshima residence and the Hinoki estate. It continued to Imaidani's Myōfukuji temple, and both sides of the street containing the residences of Lord Matsudaira Kamon-no-Suke and Lord Yoshikawa Kemotsu were completely destroyed. The entire vicinity of Lord Ban Takanosuke's residence was also lost. From there, both sides of Osōji-machi street were completely destroyed, along with part of Entsu-in temple and the residence of Lord Mōri Daizen. From Lord Okabe Kichigoro's residence onward, the hatamoto compound on Yakenzaka in Akasaka, the upper residence of Lord Aoyama Shimotsuke-no-Kami, the upper residence of Lord Matsudaira Saheiji-no-Kami, the residence of Lord Mizuno Sakon-shōgen, the residence of Lord Tsumaki Sado-no-Kami, the fire-brigade estate of Lord Matsudaira Dewa-no-Kami, and the entire estate of the Kishū (Wakayama Tokugawa) domain were destroyed. From Tenma-chō 1-chōme through 3-chōme, both front and back, including the residences of Lord Inoue Sadayū and Lord Ōkubo Nuinosuke, and the Sankaku estate, were destroyed. From there, Furuya-chō and Akasaka-chō from 1-chōme to 2-chōme were completely destroyed. From there, the area around Kinokuni-zaka and the rear gate long house of the Kishū domain estate were partially burned. From there, flying embers caused fires in Kōshi-machi, consuming the middle residence of Lord Ii Kamon-no-Suke, the back street of the Kishū domain estate, the Tsuji guardhouse, and from the middle of 10-chōme to 1-chōme in front of Shinpōji temple — both sides and back alleys were completely burned out. However, Hirakawa-chō survived, with only a small portion of the fire-brigade long house at 1-chōme burned. From there, the moat embankment area and the residences of Lord Iida Noto-no-Kami, Lord Obata Kyūma, Lord Nagai Shinano-no-Kami, Lord Tanuma Noto-no-Kami, Lord Maeda Iki-no-Kami, and Lord Hōjō Awa-no-Kami were destroyed, and from Sanbanchō through Rokubanchō everything was burned, though small corners of Ichibanchō, Yonbanchō, and Rokubanchō were spared. The residences of Lord Ōkubo Nagato-no-Kami, Lord Hotta Buzen-no-Kami, the Hitotsubashi estate, the stables at Iidamachi Kudan, and both sides of the Nakasaka slope were completely destroyed. From there, fires burned to the north riverbank. In addition, along Ushigome-dōri, from the residences of Lord Takemoto Shimotsuke-no-Kami and Lord Honda Shuri to the Omitsuke barrier, everything was lost. In Ogawa-machi, both residences of Lord Sakai Kii-no-Kami, and the residences of Lord Isshiki Genjirō, Lord Totsuka Kinjūrō, Lord Asano Sado-no-Kami, Lord Nabeshima Iyo-no-Kami, Lord Togawa Zaemon, Lord Akimoto Yasugoro, Lord Yonekura Nagato-no-Kami, Lord Iwaki Sakyōdayū, and both residences of Lord Matsudaira Sanuki-no-Kami were consumed. From there the fire spread to the Koishikawa Omitsuke gate, and further to the residences of Lord Komakine Ōnai-ki, Lord Takemoto Hayato, Lord Kubai Hanemon, Lord Mieda Tosa-no-Kami, Lord Yoda Heijūrō, and Lord Ikeda Gonhachi — and finally, at dawn on the 22nd, at the Hour of the Rooster (approximately 6 a.m.), the fire was at last stopped at the Tote no Inari shrine.
During this time, an enormous number of domain residences, townspeople's quarters, and temple and shrine buildings were consumed by the fire, the damage being so vast that it defies description with brush and paper.
