**[Right folio]** *One variety (an additional/related species)* The leaves are rounded in shape with pointed tips, and the areas between the veins are swollen, giving the appearance of wrinkles. Flower spikes form at the tips of the branches and bloom in a manner resembling *nezumimochi* (*Ligustrum japonicum*, Japanese privet). Fruits form thereafter; they are round like beans, and turn black when ripe. **[Left folio]** *Tōsei* (冬青) — *Mochi-no-ki* (Japanese holly, *Ilex integra*) — also known as *Mannen-shi* (万年枝, "ten-thousand-year branch") [source: *Jibutsu Imei*]; *Chōsei* (長生, "long life") [source: *Huiyuan Xiangzhu*]; *Mannen-ju* (万年樹, "ten-thousand-year tree") [source: *Qunfang Pu*]; *Mannen-boku* (万年木, "ten-thousand-year wood") [source: *Zhengzi Tong*]; *Tōshō* (冬牆) [source: *Runan Pushi*]. There are many varieties. The tree grows to a height of over one *jō* (approximately 3 meters). The leaves are alternate, broader and thicker than those of *jotei* (女貞, *Ligustrum lucidum*), and have a glossy surface. The leaf surface is smooth and flat, without horizontal wrinkles or vein markings, and does not wither even through the winter months. In summer, small white five-petaled flowers bloom in clusters among the leaves, after which fruits develop. Initially green, they turn red when ripe, resembling the fruit of the cherry (*sakura*) in shape.
