【Right folio】
**Mankei** (*Vitex trifolia*, Beach Vitex)
Alternative names: *hamahai* (from *Honzō Wamyō* and *Wamyōshō*), *haihara* (from *Wamyō* and *Honzō*), *hamashikimi*, *hamakazura*, *hamago* (Sashu/Hizen Province), *hamatsubaki* (same), *hō* (Tosa Province), *hamabō* (Note: this is a different plant from the *Hibiscus hamabo* of Aki Province, known as *hamaha* or *hamahō*), *hamahagi* (Izumo Province), *hamautsuki*, *hamayanagi*, *tama-aoi*, *Kīhō* (foreign/Western name)
This plant grows wild along the seashores of warm regions. Both the branches and trunk are soft and flexible, and the branches spread along the ground like vines, producing roots at each node. The leaves are round, resembling those of *Cynanchum atratum* (hakuhi), thick, pale green in color, and grow in opposite pairs. In autumn, spikes grow at the tips of the stems, reaching three to four *sun* in length, bearing flowers of a lapis lazuli blue (purplish-blue) color.
【Left folio】
The flowers bloom, resembling those of the perilla plant (*shiso*), and are remarkably large, measuring about five to six *bu*. Afterward, it bears fruit: round, brown, with a thick shell, and larger in shape than the berries of *nandina* (heavenly bamboo). According to the *Zushū-shi* (a gazetteer of Izu Province), the roots are gathered and used to dye cloth red. It is also said that the branches and leaves are collected to make low-grade incense sticks.
**A separate variety:**
The tree, leaves, and flowers are all identical in form to the above entry, except that the flowers are pure white. The fruit of this variety is likewise the same as the above and may be used medicinally.
