人家に多く植えられる。樹の高さは一丈（約3メートル）ほどになる。春、葉が出るより先に花を開く。色は紫紅色で、形はハギの花に似ているが、花弁が厚い。花を咲かせる場所が他の木と異なり、決まった場所がなく、幹にも、枝にも、あるいは枝の又の間にも咲き、一房に数輪の花を群がり生じる。花の後に実をつける。形は豆の莢（さや）に似ており、中に扁平な豆のような実がある。地に挿せば容易に発芽する。葉は花の後に生じる。形は豆の葉（一枚葉）に似て厚く、大きさは三〜四寸（約9〜12センチメートル）になる。この木の皮を採って薬用とする。

This tree is commonly cultivated in residential gardens. It grows to a height of approximately one *jō* (about 3 meters). In spring, it blooms before the leaves emerge. The flowers are purple-red in color and resemble those of *hagi* (Japanese bush clover, *Lespedeza*), but with thicker petals. Unlike other trees, the flowers bloom without a fixed location — they may appear on the trunk, on branches, or in the forks between branches — producing clusters of several flowers per spray. After flowering, the tree bears fruit resembling bean pods, containing flat, bean-like seeds inside. Cuttings planted in the ground will sprout readily. The leaves emerge after the flowers; they resemble simple bean leaves in shape, are thick, and reach three to four *sun* (approximately 9–12 cm) in size. The bark of this tree is harvested for medicinal use.
