嘉永七年寅年（1854年）六月十二日より揺れ始め、十四日の丑の刻（午前2時頃）に大地震が発生した次第である。

大和国（やまとのくに）奈良では九分（約90%）の大被害があり、負傷者の数は把握できないほどであった。伊賀国（いがのくに）上野では、町数三十六町、家数五千六百軒のうち五分（約50%）が被害を受け、死者六百余人、負傷者の数は把握できないほどであった。同じく郷方（農村部）でも大きな被害があり、佐名具（さなぐ）宿では七分（約70%）が被害を受け、死者九十人、負傷者百人余り。東海道の亀山では三分（約30%）、庄ノ石薬師では五分（約50%）、四日市では九分（約90%）、桑名では六分（約60%）の被害。江州（ごうしゅう）の膳所では七分（約70%）、大津では六分（約60%）の被害。西は播州（はりまのくに）に至るまで広範囲にわたって大きな被害があった次第である。

Account of the great earthquake that began shaking on the 12th day of the 6th month of Kaei 7, Year of the Tiger (1854), with the major earthquake striking at the Hour of the Ox (approximately 2:00 a.m.) on the 14th day.

In Nara, Yamato Province, nine-tenths (approximately 90%) of the area suffered severe damage, with the number of injured persons being beyond count. In Ueno town, Iga Province, out of 36 districts with 5,600 households, five-tenths (approximately 50%) were damaged, with more than 600 deaths and injuries too numerous to count. The surrounding rural areas also suffered great damage; at Sanagu post station, seven-tenths (approximately 70%) was damaged, with 90 deaths and more than 100 injured. Along the Tōkaidō: Kameyama suffered three-tenths (approximately 30%) damage; Shō-no-Ishiyakushi, five-tenths (approximately 50%); Yokkaichi, nine-tenths (approximately 90%); Kuwana, six-tenths (approximately 60%). In Ōmi Province: Zeze suffered seven-tenths (approximately 70%) damage; Ōtsu, six-tenths (approximately 60%). The damage extended westward all the way to Harima Province.
