本草図譜序
人之所愛莫愛於生而所悪莫悪
於死也使人無憾於疾病死生之
際者舎医何以也医之為道所係
甚重且切而其施治之間非資於
薬物則不能也医之於薬物其急
且必猶将師之於卒徒苟舎之雖
良将神医亦但束手待其亡且斃

本草図譜序
人が愛するものは生ほど愛するものはなく、憎むものは死ほど憎むものはない。人をして疾病や死生の際に悔いを残させないようにするには、医学のほかに何があろうか。医学の道は、その担う責任が極めて重く、また切実である。その治療を施す際には、薬物に頼らなければ効果を得ることはできない。医学にとっての薬物の重要性と必要性は、まさに将軍にとっての兵士のようなものである。もしこれを欠くならば、たとえ名将や神医であっても、ただ手をこまねいて患者の死を待つばかりである。

Preface to the Honzō Zufu (Illustrated Manual of Materia Medica)
Nothing is more beloved by people than life, and nothing is more abhorred than death. What else but medicine can spare people from regret at times of illness and matters of life and death? The way of medicine bears responsibilities that are extremely weighty and urgent. In the practice of treatment, without relying on medicinal substances, one cannot achieve efficacy. The urgency and necessity of medicinal substances to medicine is like soldiers to a general. If these are lacking, even the most skilled general or divine physician can only stand by helplessly and wait for the patient's demise.
