於死也使人無憾於疾病死生之
際者舎医何以也医之為道所係
甚重且切【功ヵ】而其施治之間非資於
薬物則不能也医之於薬物其急
且必猶将師之於卒徒苟舎之雖
良将神医亦但束手待其亡且斃

本草図譜 序
人が愛するものの中で、生命ほど愛されるものはなく、人が嫌うものの中で、死ほど嫌われるものはない。人をして疾病・死生の際において遺憾なからしめるものは、医術をおいて他に何があろうか。医の道たるや、その係わるところは甚だ重く、かつ切（緊要）である。そして、その治療を施す間において、薬物に資らざれば、これを能くすることはできない。医にとっての薬物は、その急なること、かつ必要なること、ちょうど将師（将軍）にとっての卒徒（兵卒）のごとくである。もしこれを捨てれば、たとえ良将・神医といえども、ただ手をこまねいてその亡且斃（滅亡と死）を待つのみである。

Preface to the Honzō Zufu (Illustrated Manual of Medicinal Plants)
Among all the things that people cherish, there is nothing more cherished than life; among all the things that people abhor, there is nothing more abhorred than death. What is there, other than the art of medicine, that can spare people from regret at the critical junctures of illness, life, and death? The Way of medicine bears responsibilities that are exceedingly weighty and urgent. Moreover, in the practice of treatment, one cannot accomplish anything without recourse to medicinal substances. The relationship of medicine to medicinal substances — in terms of urgency and necessity — is like that of a general to his soldiers. Should one abandon them, even the finest general or most gifted physician would have no recourse but to fold their hands and await destruction and death.
