翁の門に遊ふの徒翁の臨本を得されは葛飾
風たるを不得何そこれを察せさるやと翁
この言を爾りとし山水人物鳥獣草木堂宇
器財に至るまて采ある毎に寫し出し上木
し以て門人に授く漸〻として八編に達すれり【「これか」では】
序辞を《割書：予》に議る《割書：予》画を知されは画を論すること
能はすこゝにおゐて此編の成る所以を記し以て序辞
に換こと爾り

翁の門下生たちは、翁の手本を得なければ葛飾風を会得することができない。どうしてこのことを察しないのかと。翁はこの言葉をもっともだと思い、山水・人物・鳥獣・草木・堂宇・器財に至るまで、彩り豊かなものすべてを写し描き、版木に彫って門人に授けた。徐々に八編まで達したのである。
序文を私に依頼されたが、私は絵を知らないので絵を論ずることはできない。そこで、この編が成った理由を記して序文に代えることにする。

The disciples who studied under the master could not master the Katsushika style without obtaining the master's model drawings. Why do they not realize this? The master found these words reasonable, and created drawings of everything from landscapes, figures, birds and beasts, plants and trees, to buildings and utensils - all things of beauty and color - carved them into woodblocks, and gave them to his students. Gradually, this reached eight volumes.
I was asked to write a preface, but since I do not understand painting, I cannot discuss the art of painting. Therefore, I shall record the reasons why this collection came to be, and let this serve as the preface instead.
