宝井（たからい）其角（きかく）が鍾馗（しやうき）の自画賛（じくわさん）を覧（み）はべりしに
今こゝに団十郎（だんしうらう）や鬼（おに）は外（そと）
といへる発句（ほつく）なり夫（それ）鍾馗（しやうき）は疫鬼（えきき）を讓（はら）ふの術（じゆつ）あり俳優（わざおき）
団十郎は其名（そのな）高（たか）く異域（ゐいき）に聞（きこ）ゆ就中（なかんづく）英武（ゑいぶ）勇者（ゆうしや）の所作（しよさ）

大時代唐土化物 全三冊
宝井其角の鍾馗の自画賛を見たところ、
今ここに団十郎や鬼は外
という発句であった。そもそも鍾馗は疫病の鬼を払う術がある。俳優の団十郎はその名が高く、異国にまで聞こえている。とりわけ英雄的で勇壮な所作に巧みで、怨敵退治の様子を芸とする。鍾馗が邪気を退けることによく似ているので、これを称賛した其角の機転の利いた即座の作意である。これらのことに感銘を受けて、この草子の趣向としたのである。

Great Ancient Times: Chinese Monsters - Complete Three Volumes
I viewed Takarai Kikaku's self-inscribed painting of Shōki (the demon queller), which contained the hokku verse:
"Now here we have Danjūrō - demons, begone!"
Shōki possesses the art of exorcising plague demons. The actor Danjūrō's fame is so great that it is known even in foreign lands. He particularly excels at heroic and courageous performances, making an art of scenes depicting the defeat of vengeful enemies. Since this closely resembles Shōki's banishment of evil spirits, Kikaku praised this with his witty and spontaneous creative insight. Moved by these things, I have made them the theme of this illustrated book.
