帝（みかど）より弘法大師（こうぼふだいし）に金剛定寺（こんがうでうじ）の額（がく）を
書（かゝ）せ、奉らせん為（ため）に高尾（たかを）山へ勅使（ちよくし）を立
させ給ひけるに折（をり）ふし霖雨（ながあめ）のひにて清滝（きよたき）
川の水おびたゝしく岸（きし）をひたして渡（わた）る事を
得（え）ずとかく思ひ煩（わづら）ふ所に大師ほのかに
此事を聞（きゝ）給ひて川の西（にし）の脇（きは）に出
むかひ給ひければ勅使（ちよくし）は東（ひがし）の岸（きし）に
居（ゐ）て彼（かの）額（かく）をさゝげけるに杳（はるか）
なる川の面（おもて）をへたてゝ大なる筆（ふで）
に墨（すみ）を満（ふめ）て額（かく）に向ひて書（かき）給ふに
ふしぎや其（その）墨（すみ）雰（きり）のごとくにして向ふの
額（がく）の面にふりかゝる程（ほ□□）に垂露（すいろ）の点（はん）あざや
かに顕（あらは）れて入木（ゆうほく）の勢（いきほ）ひ乱（みた）れず居（すは）りけるとなり

帝（天皇）が弘法大師に金剛定寺の額を書かせ、それを奉納させるために高雄山へ勅使を派遣されたところ、折しも長雨の日で清滝川の水が非常に増水し、岸を浸して渡ることができず、あれこれと思い悩んでいた。そこに大師がほのかにこの事を聞かれて、川の西の岸に出て向かわれたので、勅使は東の岸にいてその額を掲げた。はるか遠い川面を隔てて、大きな筆に墨をたっぷりと含ませて額に向かって書かれると、不思議なことにその墨が霧のようになって向こうの額の面に降りかかる程に、垂露の点が鮮やかに現れて、入木の勢いも乱れずに座ったということである。

The Emperor ordered Kobo Daishi (Kukai) to write a plaque for Kongodoji Temple, and sent an imperial messenger to Mount Takao to have it dedicated. It happened to be a day of continuous rain, and the waters of Kiyotaki River had risen tremendously, flooding the banks so that crossing was impossible. As the messenger was troubled about what to do, Kobo Daishi faintly heard of this matter and came out to the western bank of the river. The imperial messenger stood on the eastern bank holding up the plaque. Across the distant river surface, the master took a large brush, filled it with ink, and wrote toward the plaque. Mysteriously, the ink became like mist and fell upon the surface of the plaque on the opposite side, with the dots of hanging dew appearing vividly, and the force of "entering wood" remaining steady and composed.
