甲斐守申分

先に急ぎの旨に変わって延期された由で、二三日過ぎてから聞いたので、手前においても両城が関わっているので、なおさら延期となれば我等は引き返すことになると申し送ったところ、特に問題もなかったが、色々と煩わしく申し上げられた件については仕方ないと思う。申し上げたい件もあるが、まず差し置く。なお聞き召し上げられれば申し上げる。
甲斐守の申し分
一、小西が朝鮮で粉骨砕身で働いた旨を書き上げたとのことだが、皆がご存知であれば申し上げる。先年、平安道へ出陣して川端に陣取ったところ、小西の先手に敵が朝駆けをして先手の者を追い立てたが、その者を助けもしなかった。そこで甲斐守が駆け合わせて唐人をことごとく討ち取った。これらも彼の手柄ということになるのであろうか。また晋州攻めの時も、小西は皆より遅れて攻め落としに参り、片桐市正の家来の者が取った首の鼻を削いで捨て置いたものを拾い、大将の首を討ち取ったと申して差し出し、あまつさえ一番乗りをして手柄を立てたように言上した段は珍しいことと思う。
一、小西が平安で敗軍した折、大友城への連絡として甲斐守の家来小川伝右衛門という者を入れ置いたが、しょほん（昭陽？）の城まで正月九日の晩に逃げて来たのを、その城主が甲斐守のところまで注進させたので、甲斐守が迎えに参り、小西を召し連れて越し、五六日も足を休ませている間に、都にいる備前宰相殿・石田治部少輔・増田右衛門尉・大谷刑部少輔まで、この面で拘束されるのかと注進したところ、かせんほ（開城）と甲斐守の間の連絡の城も無断で引き払い、かせんほも引き入れると決めた。第一、かせんほと都との間に大河があり、氷が解けてからは人数を引き取ることができないので、とにかく早々に打ち入るべき旨返事があった。その上、大谷刑部少輔が迎えのためかせんほまで越して来たので、この上は不要と思い、小西並びに大友を召し連れて都へ出た。寒い時分であったので、小西は具足も捨て、具足下一つの体で逃げて来たのに、着る物その他を与えた。

Statement of Kai-no-kami
1. Regarding Konishi's claim that he worked diligently in Korea: if everyone knows about this, I shall speak. In previous years, when we advanced to P'yŏngan Province and encamped by the riverside, the enemy launched a dawn attack on Konishi's vanguard and drove back his men, but he did not assist them. Then Kai-no-kami engaged and killed all the Chinese soldiers. Should these also be considered his achievements? Also, during the siege of Chinju, Konishi arrived late compared to everyone else for the assault. He took a head whose nose had been cut off and discarded by Katagiri Ichimasa's retainer, picked it up, and claimed he had taken the head of a general. Furthermore, he claimed to have made the first charge and achieved merit. This seems quite extraordinary.
1. When Konishi was defeated at P'yŏngan, a retainer of Kai-no-kami named Ogawa Denemon had been stationed as a liaison to Ōtomo's castle. On the evening of the 9th day of the first month, he fled to Sobon castle, and the castle lord reported this to Kai-no-kami. Kai-no-kami went to meet him and brought Konishi back, letting him rest for five or six days. Meanwhile, he sent word to Bizen Saisho, Ishida Jibu-shōyū, Masuda Uemon-no-jō, and Ōtani Gyōbu-shōyū in the capital, asking whether they should be detained in this area. The reply was that the liaison castle between Kaesong and Kai-no-kami should also be abandoned without notice, and it was decided to withdraw to Kaesong as well. Primarily, there was a great river between Kaesong and the capital, and once the ice melted, it would be impossible to withdraw troops, so the response was to advance quickly in any case. Moreover, since Ōtani Gyōbu-shōyū had come as far as Kaesong to meet them, it was deemed unnecessary to remain, so they brought Konishi and Ōtomo to the capital. It was during the cold season, and Konishi had discarded his armor and fled wearing only his undergarments, so they provided him with clothing and other necessities.
