**[Right folio]** (Continuing from the previous folio) ...Nyūdō, Tsunehisa, and Hatakeyama Uemon-no-suke Motokuni, their combined forces totaling over two thousand seven hundred horsemen, advanced and deployed to Suzume-no-Mori and the Nijō approach, raised five banners bearing the futabiki-ryō (double-stripe) crest, and held their position. 〇 His Lordship the Shogun also rode out to Nakamikado-Ōmiya with his mounted escort of over three thousand horsemen, declaring that he would lend his support at whichever point of attack proved most difficult, and advanced his banner to hold position. As for His Lordship's attire: he did not wear the bear-fur kosode, but instead donned a belly-armor (haramaki) of smoked leather, with the interior laced in two rows with black leather. He fastened the cords of a five-plate helmet of matching color, and wore at his belt the heirloom treasure known as "Shinosaku," with two additional swords called "Futatsu-mei" attached alongside it. He wore the dagger known as "Yakken-tōshi," and mounted his prized great dappled horse of five shaku in height, on which a gold-rimmed saddle was placed with a thick-fringed crupper attached. The reason His Lordship did not wear the kosode on this occasion, but instead wore the smoked leather belly-armor, was that the kosode is the auspicious traditional garment worn during the subjugation of enemies of the Imperial Court. **[Left folio]** This is the hallowed garment of battle against the Court's foes (kisena). On this occasion, however, the subjugation was an act of discipline against the treachery of his own retainers — they were not truly enemies. Wearing the battle-garment, and mingling among the troops, it is said that His Lordship intended that, should he catch sight of Ujikiyoshi or Mitsuyuki, he would cut them down himself without leaving it to others. 〇 Meanwhile, Harima-no-kami pressed upon the Uchino approach and raised a great battle cry. First into the fray, Hatakeyama Uemon-no-suke charged with over seven hundred horsemen, calling out: "Do not let the enemy pass through the front — simply charge and stop them from the flank!" Thereupon warriors of a thousand men's worth each — Yusa, Jinnō (Jinbō), Honda (Kondō), Saitō, Fukada, Rengein, Takada, and Kumaki — charged in from the flank. Yet the three hundred–plus horsemen of Harima-no-kami's force paid this no heed, broke through, and charged headlong into the Kanrei's forces, engaging them in a melee. 〇 Meanwhile, Sasaki Jibu-no-shō Takanobu, who had been held in reserve at Daijō-hata, saw that fighting had broken out at the Nijō approach, turned southward along the Ukon-no-baba, and swayed his great banner bearing the yotsume-yui crest...
