**Yomogi (Mugwort / *Artemisia*)** [From *Bencao Gangmu* (Honzō Kōmoku)]
It grows abundantly in mountains and open fields. In spring it sprouts from old roots, and by summer its stem gradually elongates. In autumn it branches into slender stems, flowers, and sets seed. During summer, something called *kaiei* (yomogi no wata; a gall or cottony growth) may form within the stems or leaves. This is the product of the mugwort's surplus vital energy (*ki*). When autumn arrives, within the center of this gall there is found a single insect. At first it resembles a maggot, but later it takes on the appearance of a mole cricket (*Gryllotalpa*; *kera*), though extremely small. Moreover, from spring to summer, there are occasional instances in which mugwort sprouts from a mole cricket. It is surmised that the insect within the mugwort gall grows and matures underground, and after it has lived out its life, mugwort sprouts from within its body, thus returning to mugwort. This makes it clear that the insect within the mugwort gall resembles the form of a mole cricket. The whole body of the mole cricket appears to decay,

and as the mugwort grows, the body becomes incomplete; soft white shoots (*hakujaku*; tender white stems) emerge as mugwort stems, and this occurs in more than one location. Furthermore, if a mole cricket is killed and buried in the soil, mugwort may grow from it. However, mugwort does not necessarily arise solely from mole crickets — it also grows according to the nature of the soil. This matter deserves careful investigation. Mole crickets have both male and female: those with long wings that cry at night within the soil are male, and those with short wings that do not cry are female. In general, as for the things that give rise to insects, various theories hold that they arise from insect nests (*chūka*). It is surmised that through the transformation of surplus vital energy, that which is without feeling (*mujō*; inanimate) is transformed into that which has feeling (*ujō*; animate). One or two such examples are listed below.
**Mushigusa (*Bungbosō* / *Hemiphragma heterophyllum* or similar gall-producing plant)** [From *Bencao Gangmu*]
