叙
夫（それ）道（みち）は近（ちか）きにありこれを遠（とほ）きにもとむと
聖（ひじり）の言（こと）にもとづき年頃（としごろ）聞（きゝ）おける古（ふる）き人（ひと）〳〵の
よみたまふをしへになるべきやまと歌（うた）のしかも
幼童（えうどう）の耳（みゝ）に近（ちか）くさとし安（やす）きをあつめて
ひとまきとなしひそかに一 句（く）半 句（く）の古（ふる）き言葉（ことば）を
かりに題（だい）してこれを家童（かどう）にあたへ朝（あさ）な夕（ゆふ）なに
うまくよましめむことをねがふ幼童（えうどう）つねに
くちずさみとしなかばたはふれにあてゝ記憶（きおく）

させばひとゝなりて後（のち）事（こと）にふれて孝弟（かうてい）謹行（きんかう）の
たすけとし身（み）を脩（をさ）め家（いへ）を斉（とゝの）ふる基（もとゐ）とならむ

序文
そもそも道は身近なところにあるのに、これを遠いところに求めてしまうという聖人の言葉に基づき、長年聞き覚えてきた古人たちが詠まれた教えとなるべき和歌の中でも、特に幼い子どもの耳に身近で理解しやすいものを集めて一冊とし、ひそかに一句半句の古い言葉を借りて題材とし、これを家の子どもに与えて朝夕によく読ませることを願う。幼い子どもが常に口ずさみ、年の半ばには遊びながらでも記憶し、

そうすれば一人前になった後、様々な場面で孝行や慎み深い行いの助けとし、身を修め家を整える基礎となるであろう。父兄はもとより、そばでこれを聞く人々も、一句一首でも暗記することを心がければ、また生涯にわたってその身に大きな益があり、これは遠くに行き高いところに登るための一助となるであろうということである。

Preface
Based on the sage's teaching that the Way exists close at hand, yet people seek it in distant places, I have collected waka poems composed by ancient masters that should serve as teachings—particularly those that are accessible and easy for young children to understand—and compiled them into one volume. Borrowing quietly from the ancient words of a verse or half-verse as subject matter, I give this to the children of the household, hoping they will read it well morning and evening. Young children should constantly recite these verses, and by mid-year, even through play, they will memorize them.

Then, after they become adults, these will serve as aids for filial piety and prudent conduct in various situations, becoming the foundation for cultivating oneself and ordering one's household. Not only parents and elder brothers, but also those who hear these nearby—if they make it their intention to memorize even one verse or one poem, they will gain great benefit throughout their lives. This will serve as an aid for going to distant places and climbing to high places.
