## Kaihankō (A Study of Tsunamis)

On the night of the 14th day of the 6th month of the Year of Kinoe-Tora, Kaei 7 (1854) [the day after Shōsho, the Minor Heat solar term], an earthquake struck the Kinai (Five Home Provinces), the Tōkai, and the Nankai regions.
In the winter of the same year, during the morning hours (Hiyu, i.e., mid-morning) of the 4th day of the 11th month,己巳 [the day after the Winter Solstice], a great earthquake struck the provinces of the Kinai, Tōkai, Nankai, San'yō, San'in, and Saikai circuits. The following day, Kanoe-Uma, tsunamis struck across these circuits. The damage was particularly severe at Ōsaka in Settsu, Uwajima in Iyo, and Shimoda in Izu; buildings and dwellings were submerged, and many people were swept away or drowned.
