Item: On the 7th day of the 1st month, as a congratulatory gesture for the New Year's herb ceremony (wakana), the domain's resident official (rusui) Tsuda Kyūemon (Mori-■) was dispatched as envoy, following the precedent set by the previous lord:
A fresh sea bream (one box) was presented to the Kubō-sama (the Shōgun). The Shōgun's chamberlain, Mizukami Mino-no-Kami (Nori-■), conveyed that the presentation would be reported to the Shōgun in due course.
To the Dainagon-sama (the lord of the Nishi-maru, i.e., the heir apparent), Yokota Sakudayū (Naomichi) was dispatched as envoy to the Nishi-maru, with an identical presentation. The chamberlain, Kose Yamato-no-Kami (Toshi-■), conveyed that the presentation would similarly be reported in due course.
Upon completion of these presentations, formal acknowledgment letters written on hinoki cypress paper (hinoki-bōsho) arrived from the duty senior councilor (goyōban), Sakai Saemon-no-jō (Tadatoshi), and from the Nishi-maru Senior Councilor, Akimoto Tajima-no-Kami (Suzutsuna).
[Text of the Hinoki Acknowledgment Letter]
To: Matsudaira Sen-no-suke
We have received your presentation of one box of sea bream as a congratulatory gift for the New Year's herb ceremony, and have duly reported it. This is most appreciated. Written with reverence.
7th day of the 1st month [Signed] Tadatoshi
※ Note: The hinoki acknowledgment letter from Tajima-no-Kami was identical in content, and is therefore omitted here.
These acknowledgment letters on hinoki paper were then dispatched to both parties via official envoys (messenger officials).
