みたれば。早や是までと諦（あき）らめて。家内一同思ひ〳〵の避難地（ひなんち）
に就きたるに。實之吉は今一度家具を運び出さむものと。単身
烟（けむり）を潜（くゞ）りて。屋内に踏入りたるこそ運の極みなれ。忽ち眩葷
して。其の場に倒れ焼け崩（くず）れたる襖障子（ふすましやうじ）の下となりて。大火傷（おほやけど）
をなしながらも夢中に表（おもて）へ匍（は）ひ出でたる処を。折よく巡査に認
められ。戸部分署（とべぶんしよ）に運（はこ）ばれしが。全身（ぜんしん）に完膚（くわんふ）なく耳も鼻も現形
を存せず。宛然天刑病者（さながらてんけいべうしや）の如く。腐爛（ふらん）したれば。更（さら）に戸板（といた）に乗
せて野毛山なる十全病院に送りて。副院長渋川氏を首（はじ）め助手七
人に治療（ぢれう）を受けしめたる後（のち）。医員（いゐん）の問に宿所姓名を答へ。且つ
地蔵坂（ぢざうさか）に親戚小林なるものゝ在る由を告げたれば。戸部分署よ
り人を派して小林某を呼迎へ。實之吉の女房ヒデ（二十八）に通（し）
知（ら）せられたるに。十三日午前二時三十分頃ヒデは同病院に来り。
此始末に夫が病床（びやうしやう）の傍らに泣倒（なきたほ）れたるよし。斯くて實之吉は医
薬の効なく同五時終に死亡したり。

蔦座にては。過般より活動写真（かつどうしやしん）を演しつゝありしが。予定の日
限興行を終りて。火災の際は休業し居たるにぞ。近火と聞くよ
り。隣家（りんか）吉田町一丁目一番地に住する座主斎藤調三郎 （六十三）
雇人樋口伊三郎 （十九）、姓不詳安太郎 （十九）、茶掛姓不詳敬次郎
（二十七）、楽屋番田邊熊吉 （四十三）、同人妻みね （三十七）出方頭
竹内清次郎 （五十四）の七名。座附の道具（だうぐ）など取片付の為め。同
座に駈付（かけつ）け。余念（よねん）なく働き居る内。向ひなる勧業場日の出館の
三階焼落ちて猛火（もうくわ）は。早くも四隣に廻（まわ）りて逃げ道を杜絶（とぜつ）したれ
ば。何れも無惨の最後（さいご）を遂げたり。斯と知らずや。翌朝に至り
座主も雇人の姿も一向に見へざるを訝（いぶか）りつゝ。人々残灰取除（とりのぞ）き

……火が自分の方へ迫ってくるのを見るや、家人に命じて家具の片付けに尽力し、ほぼその半分を取り出したところ、この時すでに火は家の四方を取り囲んでいたため、もはやここまでと諦めて、家族一同それぞれの避難場所へ向かった。ところが實之吉は、もう一度家具を運び出そうと、一人で煙をくぐって屋内に踏み込んだのが、まさに運の尽きであった。たちまち眩暈を起こして、その場に倒れ、焼け崩れた襖や障子の下敷きとなり、大火傷を負いながらも夢中になって表へはい出たところを、折よく巡査に発見され、戸部分署へ運ばれた。しかし全身に完膚なく、耳も鼻も原形をとどめず、まるで天刑病者のように腐爛していたため、さらに戸板に乗せて野毛山にある十全病院へ送り、副院長渋川氏をはじめ助手七人の治療を受けさせた後、医員の問いかけに住所と氏名を答え、さらに地蔵坂に小林という親戚がいることを告げたので、戸部分署から人を派遣して小林某を呼び迎え、實之吉の妻ヒデ（二十八歳）に知らせた。十三日午前二時三十分頃、ヒデは同病院に駆けつけ、この有様に夫の病床の傍らに泣き崩れたという。こうして實之吉は、薬の効も無く、同日午前五時についに死亡した。

蔦座では、先ごろより活動写真を上映していたが、予定の日数の興行を終えて、火災の際は休業していた。近くで火事が起きたと聞くや、隣家の吉田町一丁目一番地に住む座主・斎藤調三郎（六十三歳）、雇人・樋口伊三郎（十九歳）、姓不詳・安太郎（十九歳）、茶掛・姓不詳・敬次郎（二十七歳）、楽屋番・田邊熊吉（四十三歳）、その妻・みね（三十七歳）、出方頭・竹内清次郎（五十四歳）の七名が、座の道具などを取り片付けるために駆けつけ、懸命に働いているうちに、向かいの勧業場・日の出館の三階が焼け落ちて猛火はたちまち四方に回り、逃げ道を塞いでしまったため、七名は全員、無惨な最期を遂げた。このことを知らずに、翌朝になっても座主も雇人の姿もまったく見えないのを不審に思いながら、人々が残灰を取り除いていくと……

...Upon seeing the fire advancing toward him, he directed his household to work at salvaging furniture and managed to remove nearly half of it. But by then the fire had already encircled the house on all sides. Resigning himself to the inevitable, he told the family to flee to whatever refuge they could find. However, Saneyoshi, determined to rescue one more load of belongings, plunged alone back through the smoke into the building—and this proved to be his fatal moment. He immediately became dizzy and collapsed on the spot, pinned beneath burning, crumbling sliding doors and fusuma screens. Suffering severe burns, he crawled in a daze out to the street, where he was fortunately spotted by a patrolling policeman and carried to the Tobe Branch Police Station. His entire body was without a patch of unburnt skin; his ears and nose no longer retained their original form, and he had festered and rotted like a leper. He was then placed on a wooden door-board and transported to the Jūzen Hospital on Nogeyama, where he received treatment from Vice Director Shibukawa and seven assistants. After treatment, he responded to the medical staff's questions, giving his address and name, and also mentioned that he had a relative named Kobayashi on Jizō-zaka. The Tobe Branch Station dispatched someone to fetch this Kobayashi, and word was sent to Saneyoshi's wife, Hide (age 28). At around 2:30 a.m. on the 13th, Hide arrived at the hospital and, seeing the state of her husband, collapsed weeping at his bedside. Despite all medical efforts, Saneyoshi passed away at 5:00 a.m. the same morning.

**● The Tragedy at the Tsutaza Theater** *(See illustration)*
The Tsutaza theater had been showing moving pictures for some time, but had concluded its scheduled run and was closed on the night of the fire. Upon hearing that a fire had broken out nearby, the theater's owner Saitō Chōsaburō (age 63), who lived next door at No. 1, Yoshida-chō 1-chōme, along with hired hand Higuchi Isaburō (age 19), a man of unknown surname named Antarō (age 19), tea server of unknown surname Keijirō (age 27), dressing-room attendant Tanabe Kumakichi (age 43), his wife Mine (age 37), and head usher Takeuchi Seijirō (age 54)—seven people in all—rushed to the theater to retrieve its stage props and equipment. While they worked desperately, the third floor of the Hinode-kan exhibition hall across the street burned and crashed down, and the raging flames quickly spread in all directions, cutting off all escape routes. All seven met a pitiful end. Unaware of their fate, people the following morning grew suspicious when neither the owner nor any of the hired hands could be found anywhere. As they began to clear away the remaining ash...
