Hōreki 5th year, Year of the Boar (1755), 6th Month, 13th Day Relative: Urano Tamiya (seal) To the Shrine Community Late Tonomo-no-shojo's Heir: Yamamoto Komaru-dayu (seal) Item: On the 14th, Nagato-no-kami Yoaki submitted notice that he would be ascending the mountain to Kibune beginning today. Item: On the 15th, Suonomi Okiaki came to call. This was regarding the matter of having communicated with Soga Kizaemon as previously requested. (Already mentioned before.) Item: On the same day, a small gathering (koyoriai) was held. This was to consult regarding the above submission by Okiaki. (Already mentioned before.) Item: Regarding the petition of Zengoro of Umegatsujimachi: During the small gathering, after deliberation, it was decided that until further notice is given, Kichijiro would be placed in the custody of his relatives Takeyo Jiuemon and Take no Jirozaku. It was decided in consultation that he would be summoned today and given a stern reprimand. Accordingly, the monthly duty officers Hirohisa, Tetsuki, Sueko, and Fumiki, along with the miscellaneous official Hokaku and the assembly hall's Gakuken, were seated together and the admonition was delivered. Those summoned were: the village elder of Umegatsujimachi, Denbei; the community official (gyoji), Sogoro; the petitioner, Zengoro; the accused party, Kichijiro of Ume; Kichijiro's father, Kichiemon; and Kichijiro's relatives, Jirozaku and Yojiroemon. They were informed that Kichijiro's unlawful conduct on this occasion was considered outrageous, and that if a strict investigation were conducted, he would ordinarily be subject to banishment from the area. However, out of compassion, he would be let off this time. Should he again engage in any violent or disruptive behavior, however slight, the townspeople are to report it immediately, at which time strict punishment will be imposed. If the townspeople conceal such behavior, they themselves will be held accountable. If there is anything at all to report, it must be submitted without delay—so the admonition was delivered, and those present replied that they humbly accepted. Item: In the evening, the community officials (gyoji) of the Seven Blocks petitioned to hold a boar hunt on the embankment thicket belonging to the public authorities (kōgi). Item: On the same evening, Tokemon of Minami came to call, and submitted a completion certificate (sumistate) stating that the matter previously petitioned—namely the meeting with Lord Aki-no-suke's household—had been resolved. Item: On the 16th, after the midday meal, a small gathering was held. This was to consult regarding the boar hunt, in response to the petition from the officials of the Seven Blocks. (Already mentioned before.) Item: On the same day, a letter arrived from Nagato-no-kami, who was staying at Kibune after ascending the mountain. It stated that regarding the cedar bark needed for the repairs to the shrine, the head carpenter's estimate had been significantly off, resulting in a considerable shortage. Since the matter was urgent, he had intended to purchase it locally, but all available cedar bark was spring bark and none of good quality was to be found. Therefore, with the attending official Chikuzen-no-suke present as witness, Mōbun Uemon was instructed to fell one cedar tree on the sacred mountain. Because of the urgency of the matter, no prior consultation had been sought, and this notification was accordingly submitted. Further details would be explained upon descending the mountain. Item: On the 17th, as the boar hunt was conducted, officials were dispatched from both the Kadokura storehouses. The attendant (nakama) Ichibei came forward. Regarding the gifts of sake and food, detailed account is as already mentioned before. Item: It has been the custom to present sachets of fragrance (kaori-bukuro) to Lord Matsudaira Tominosuke each year; this year, there was a suggestion from within the assembly that a fan might be presented instead. However, another opinion was raised, and since the offering of fragrance sachets has been the established practice from long before, it would be appropriate to continue with fragrance rather than change. It was proposed that the contents remain as they have been, while the box and cord fittings should be made somewhat more economical. The assembly agreed that this was reasonable, and this was duly decided. Item: Today, a letter arrived from Goto Bannai addressed to Hosho. It stated that Iwaki Zenzaemon of Lord Tominosuke's household had been assigned his official duties on the first day of the 6th month and had departed for Edo. He has been appointed as the Edo House Elder (Edo-garō). Numano Mikiyoshi has been appointed as the bannerman (bannin), concurrently serving as a secretary (goyōnin). Kawase Kansuke has been appointed as Castle Governor (jodai). In light of this, a letter of congratulation should be sent to Lord Iwaki Zenzaemon. Item: Yesterday, the shrine festival accounts (matsuri kanjō) were delivered to both offices. Taking the opportunity, a call was paid to Soga Kizaemon of the Kobori household. This was carried out by Hosho and Hodo. (Already mentioned before.) Item: The silver arranged through the good offices of Lord Chikuzen-no-kami was procured and received.
