### 御披露

一、御町中の皆様へ

万々歳、めでたくめでたく、お軒並みに揺れに揺られ、仰天されたことと存じます。地獄のような思いをなさいましたことと、お察し申し上げます。しばらくお静まりください。私めからご報告申し上げます。

先だってより、江戸前の鯰（なまず）の大蒲焼き——すなわち地震の大道芸——を披露いたしましたところ、揺り出し（地震）によります焼失により、家屋・蔵・身代（財産）に至るまで御揺り上げ・動揺の仕打ちを受けられましたる段、まことに大変な時刻・出来事にて、古今まれにみる御難儀と存じ奉ります。

なおまた、今晩は皆様の御憂いのために、市中の難儀めし（難儀飯）、この末「どうしょう汁（道生き汁）」、打身・骨抜の即席御療治を取り合わせ、格別に風儀よく、世直しのために差し上げ申すべく候間、民の竈（かまど）の御賑々しく、御威光賀のほど、ひとえにお頼み申し上げます。以上。

### Public Announcement

To all residents of the neighborhood:

Ten thousand years of blessings! How you must have been shaken — house by house, roof by roof — left utterly dumbfounded! We humbly understand that you have endured what felt like hell itself. Please, calm yourselves. Allow us to make our announcement.

Some time ago, the great Edo-style catfish kabayaki — that is to say, the grand street performance of the earthquake — was put on for all to see. As a result of being shaken out and burned, homes, storehouses, and entire fortunes were shaken up and thrown into turmoil. We humbly regard this as a most extraordinary event, a calamity unprecedented in all of history.

Furthermore, this evening, for the consolation of all citizens suffering throughout the city, we humbly offer: "hardship rice" (nangi-meshi), "what-shall-we-do soup" (dōshō-jiru), and an instant remedy for bruises and dislocations — all specially combined and properly presented, in the spirit of setting the world right again. We sincerely pray for the prosperity of the people's hearths and the glory of the benevolent authorities. That is all.
