## Kannon Entsū-den: Editorial Notes (Hanrei)
○ The accounts of origins (engi) recorded in this compilation are based on my long-held vow and aspiration. Having traveled far from Ushū (Dewa Province) to Chichibu, where I have resided for a number of years, I traveled widely throughout the district to visit its sacred sites. With the permission of the head priests of each temple, I was able to reverently examine the various engi documents kept in their sacred repositories. In addition, I cross-referenced these with the private notes and draft manuscripts recorded by various scholars, corrected uncertain points against the testimony of local elders, and consulted classical texts for any remaining ambiguities. Although this work is, on the whole, reasonably complete, I fear there may be no small number of omissions and missing passages.
○ The reason this compilation does not include an explanation of the name and meaning of "Kanzeon" (Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion) is that these matters are treated in full detail in Shōyo's "Reigen Shinshō."
○ Regarding the origins of the pilgrimage, the chronological sequence of events, and the similarities and differences among various accounts — all of which are confused and intermingled — it is indeed difficult to distinguish…
