（長兵衛）「神と名乗るような神号、それはずいぶん無理なことじゃないか。しかし社（やしろ）は東路（あずまじ）に、気も浮き立つ両銚子（ちょうし）の鼻（はな）。江戸で噂の常陸帯（ひたちおび）、磐石院（ばんじゃくいん）の長兵衛というのが唯一の社（やしろ）さ。」
●（権八）「そりゃ神国（しんこく）にて隠れなき鯰（なまず）を抑えた磐石（ばんじゃく）の★（難読）。ああ、もしもし、そういわれちゃあ面目ないが、わしはこの間、いつものとおり仲間の手合の寄合（よりあい）に出雲（いずも）へ発ったが、きのうきょう留守にしている間に震（ふる）った大鯰（おおなまず）――本当のことだが、これまではお江戸に地震（じしん）のないようにと、寝た間も石は緩（ゆる）めませぬ、神前（しんぜん）ならばどのようにも手強（てづよ）い神託（しんたく）もよく申せましょうが、ほんの途中（とちゅう）でしてね。かぎり江戸の鼻まで帰ったおかげにゃあ、気が強い、弱い鯰は除けて通し、強いやつならむかっ腹（ぱら）。この以後（いご）に大鯰が出て、左右の髭（ひげ）を振ってきても、びくともさせることじゃあございませぬ。およばずながら要（かなめ）の石杖（いしずえ）。家根（やね）の瓦（かわら）は落ちて割れ、破れた家はまだ野宿（のじゅく）。吉原五町を火事で焼け、江戸の鯰（なまず）と口々に。なまずの中の鯰（なまず）、一匹、いつでもまいりにございませ。神前（しんぜん）浄（きよ）めて待っております。」

(Chōbei): "To call yourself by a divine name — that's quite an unreasonable thing, isn't it? But the shrine stands along the Eastern Road, with spirits rising high at both capes of Chōshi. The famous Hitachi sash of Edo — I, Chōbei of Banjaku-in, am the one and only shrine."
●(Gonpachi): "Why, you are the great boulder that pins down the catfish famous throughout this land of the gods! Ah, excuse me — I must say, it's rather embarrassing to hear that. You see, just recently, as I always do, I set off for Izumo for the meeting of my fellow deities. But just yesterday and today, while I was away, the great catfish shook things up — and truly, up until now I had made sure there would be no earthquakes in Edo; even while sleeping I never loosened the stone. If I were at my shrine, I could deliver a stern divine oracle however I pleased, but this happened right in the middle of my journey, you see. Thanks to hurrying back to the edge of Edo, I've kept my spirit strong — the weak catfish I pushed aside and passed through, and if one is strong, it makes me furious. From this point on, even if a great catfish emerges and shakes its left and right whiskers at you, I will not let it budge so much as an inch. Though I am inadequate, I am the cornerstone. The roof tiles have fallen and shattered, houses are broken and people still sleep outdoors. Yoshiwara's five districts burned in the fire, and everyone speaks of 'the catfish of Edo.' Among all the catfish, you are the catfish supreme — come visit any time you like. I shall purify the sacred ground and await you."
