[The items] were to be kept out of the enemy's hands, and those remaining in the camp were thoroughly instructed to this effect. Regarding the honorable banner, it being an object of special importance, while it would have been desirable to have it attached to strengthen the formation and maintain the defensive line, to carelessly assign such an important item without adequate guard would not only bring shame upon the martial house should anything untoward occur, but if the items bearing the hollyhock crest of the Aoi were to be defiled by foreign barbarians, it would become a national disgrace and an inexcusable matter. Therefore, a report was submitted stating that there was no need for the honorable banner to be attached, and the banner-bearers were instructed to withdraw ahead of the main force. Furthermore, regarding the camp, since it was unclear whether it would be needed again in the following year after the troops had withdrawn, the officials suggested leaving it as it was. However, since there had been various inconveniences from staying in temporary shelters upon first arriving at the location, the construction was completed as quickly as possible. But due to rushing ahead, the terrain had not been sufficiently considered, and the layout of the quarters was incomplete. If the circumstances at that time were understood, the unavoidable reasons for the decisions made would become clear, but since those above were not familiar with the situation, there would likely be criticism. Therefore, a report was submitted stating the desire to dismantle everything to the point where no trace of the original layout would remain. After the advance party withdrew, indigenous laborers (Ainu) were promptly hired, and available members of the unit all turned out together to dismantle what remained here and there, clearing away and cleaning up carefully and thoroughly. One On the twenty-third day of the same month, the unit's duties were completed, the assigned position was vacated, and [the unit proceeded to] Yamaoka...
