[The author proposed] sending Yamadera Mitsugu along with those responsible for managing and overseeing the supplies and equipment, while [the author] himself wished to go ashore with a small number of foot soldiers—at the very least with just his personal attendants. With such a small number of people, it should not cause any particular hardship to the Ainu people. Moreover, [the author suggested that] if [the other party] were merely to witness the proceedings until the withdrawal from the current location was complete, would that not suffice? Upon [the author] stating this, [the other party] replied that while [the other party] understood [the author's] point, [the author] had already overridden even the official orders to proceed overland and was instead going by direct sail—so if [the other party] were now to go ashore and proceed overland, it would create inconsistencies in the report to Edo. Therefore, was it not necessary [for the other party] to witness the entire proceedings from beginning to end? [The other party] asked that [the author] appreciate this point. Since the time for withdrawal had not yet arrived and there was no urgency, [the author] replied that [the other party] should think the matter over more carefully, and that [the author himself] would also continue to deliberate on it, after which [the author] returned. Then, on the eleventh day of the same month, the wind and rain became extremely violent, causing a great storm. After that, the condition of the sea changed entirely—it was utterly different from the appearance of the sea at the beginning of the month. The sea surface was dark all around, and even on clear days the winds and waves were rough. Autumn had suddenly deepened remarkably, and already [a vessel called] the *Uneme* had been caught in a severe gale—some ships were wrecked, others had their masts blown off, and the situation became so extraordinary that there was not a single ship that came through unscathed. Then, on the evening of the fourteenth day of the same month, Yamadera Mitsugu was summoned by Lord Denjūrō, and [the discussion turned to] the long-standing matter of crossing to Sōya...
