Even the will-o'-the-wisps (spirits of the dead)

Let all people think with compassion — / once buried, nothing but the grave

The people who could have been relied upon
Have perished — and our own bodies grow hungry too,

The miserable epidemic of "korori" breaks out,
And the bells of the cremation ground temples

**Jakuren Hōshi:**
The Russians, having at last
Come to a country never before seen,
Are climbing together up Edo's Takanawa

Topsy-turvy — the son
Has gone ahead first;
May the father at least not be left unable to rise
