As a result, the dispute split into three factions, and over a period of four years, an investigation was conducted by both the imperial court and the shogunate under the jurisdiction of the two Shoshidai (Kyoto Deputy) lords, Mizuno Izumi-no-kami and Iga-no-kami. As a compromise resolution (chūwa no go-sata), in the fourth year of the same era, the Year of the Boar (Kyōhō 4, 1719), in the presence of the Buke Tensō (武家伝奏, Liaison Officer for Warrior Affairs) Lord Middle Counselor Nakain, with Lord Middle Counselor Madenokōji, the Tensō of the shrine, serving as presiding officer, and Lord Bōjō-no-Ben seated in attendance, the general representatives of the entire shrine as well as the representatives of the shrine officials and ujibito from Shingū and below were summoned, and the purport of the imperial decision was conveyed through two official written documents.
The contents of the written documents:
Item: When a vacancy arises among the Five Officials (go-kan), the position shall be filled by one of the seven families of shrine officials serving in the Kataoka shrine post. When a vacancy arises in the Kataoka post or below, the position shall be filled from among the five persons who have been called daikan-yaku (deputy officials) within the shrine.
Item: When a vacancy occurs among the Five Officials, should the Kataoka, Kifune, hafuri (祝, junior priests), negi (禰宜, priests), or others naturally have an impediment (故障) or illness (所労), the aforementioned deputy [officials shall serve...]
