From within the two families, it was proposed that the following five persons should petition for succession: the eldest son Yamadayū, the second son Jirōmaru, two younger brothers Genba and Kazuma, and also Okamoto Kunai's younger brother Tamematsu. However, this was stated to be contrary to the official directives, and furthermore, it was declared that the group as a whole could not accept this. When this was communicated, it was then decided that each should petition individually, and accordingly, this was reported to the Imperial Messenger (Gidensō). At this time, the entire body of the Chief Shrine Administrators (Sōshasji) and shrine members (ujibito) also submitted a petition. The gist of it was that, as they had all deeply lamented the repeated disturbances and upheavals that had occurred time and again, they petitioned in writing to the Imperial Messenger and the Magistrate that, in order for the shrine to be at peace for all time and for the divine rituals and festivals to be conducted without incident, the positions left vacant by the extinction of the five families should be filled according to shrine law through the system of successive transfer of posts (jidai tennin). In response, they were instructed that, for the time being, the matter of succession would be handled in due order, and that the written statement regarding the successors, as previously directed, should also be submitted.
