Due to [his] private self-interest [note: "私" (private/personal) appears as a marginal annotation], and moreover, in the late tenth month of Entoku 2nd year (1490), he submitted a memorial relinquishing that post, and on the 27th day of the same month, he caused [participants] to be entirely neglectful of the御手代会 (oteshiro-kai, the proxy assembly), as well as the御掃除神事 (osōji shinji, the purification/cleaning ritual), and all other [shrine duties] — this was a thing utterly without precedent. Could the grievances of the entire shrine come to anything other than what they did? The said Shigenori, disregarding the will of the gods (shinryo), fearing not the imperial will (eiryo), and making light of the shrine officials (shakan), desired to be restored to his original official post, and submitted a three-part written appeal (sankan chinjō). Nevertheless, despite the matter being noted for an imperial ruling (chokusai), because he had caused the shrine rituals to fall into neglect and deficiency (ketsujо), [his appeal] was rejected and annulled. In the late fifth month of the same third year [of Entoku, 1491], Shigenori and his son incurred imperial censure (chokkan), and in accordance with shrine precedent (sharei), they were permanently subjected to severe punishment (jūka). Thereupon, the clan member Shigeak(i) [note: red annotations add "之" and "も"] was summoned forth; on the 2nd day of the 6th month of the same year, he was humbly appointed as gon-hōri (権祝, Provisional Chief Ritualist); and on the 12th day of the same month, he was appointed as shō-hōri (正祝, Principal Chief Ritualist). His son Shigeka(ta) (重賢) was appointed as the Sawada-hōri (沢田祝). In addition, the purport of the questions and answers of the numerous sessions of devoted service (gohōjin mondō) has been recorded in detail at the end [of this document].
