現代語訳
愛宕山略図
そもそも当山は山城国葛野郡の西北にあり、嵯峨の一の鳥居から本社まで険しい道のりが五十町（約5.5km）ある。試の坂から清滝川にかかる橋を渡猿橋と名付ける。樒が原は北の山際にあり、南星峯は乾（北西）の方角の峰をいう。火燧権現は十七町目にある。
御本社大権現は、日本最初の軍神で帝都守護の崇廟、諸国鎮火第一の神社である。光仁天皇の天応元年（781年）に慶俊僧都が勅命を受けて勧請申し上げた所である。
山は王城（京都）の乾（北西）にそびえて白雲が腰をめぐり、本殿・末社は巽（南東）に向かって旭日に対し、平安京の万戸を照覧している。
神威は日本全国の大小の国境に輝いて、一切の生類を利済し、善を勧め悪を懲らしめるという御託宣を拝してわかるのである。そうであるから天地陰陽不測の変化はしばらく論じないとしても、過去の業による横災や現在自得の急難を免れることは、全く権現の御神託を信じることにあるのだと、云々。
【愛宕山大権現御託宣】
衆生が常に世界の火を穢し、己一人の思いを抱いて天に逆らい地に背くものは、我は常に火乱神を遣わして、その不浄を焼き滅ぼす。上が豊かで下が苦しむときは、殿舎に火の雨を降らして上の財を散じて苦しむものに与える。我は常に王法を守り国家の安全を護るが故に、邪見のものの家を焼き滅ぼす。心に満足を思うことなかれ。天は満ちるを欠き、我は人の奢りを欠く。

世の人が神風の伊勢の宮居を拝み奉って下向の際、必ず当山の権現に詣でることには、その由縁がある。
伊勢廟は日の御神にして日の本である。当山は火の御神にして火の元である。日と火は同性同体であることから、参宮の人々は、天照らす日の明らかな御恵みを畏み敬って、我が胸の火の汚く穢れたるを清めるために、帰りに当山に登って深く権現の加護を祈り、日々用いる火の冥加を恐れ慎んで、少しの火でも疎かにせず、己が心の火を清めて永く保ち守るために詣でることと知るべきである。

Abbreviated Map of Mount Atago
Mount Atago is located in the northwest of Kadono District, Yamashiro Province. From the first torii gate in Saga to the main shrine, there is a treacherous path of fifty chō (approximately 5.5 km). The bridge crossing the Kiyotaki River from Kokoromi-no-saka is named Toen Bridge. Shikimi-ga-hara is at the northern foot of the mountain, and Nanseihō refers to the peak in the inui (northwest) direction. Hiuchi Gongen is located at the seventeenth chō mark.
The Main Shrine Daigongen is Japan's first war deity, a revered shrine protecting the imperial capital and the foremost shrine for fire suppression throughout the provinces. In the first year of Ten'ō era (781) during Emperor Kōnin's reign, the monk Keishun received an imperial edict to establish this shrine.
The mountain rises in the inui (northwest) of the royal capital (Kyoto), with white clouds encircling its waist. The main hall and subsidiary shrines face tatsumi (southeast) toward the rising sun, overlooking the myriad households of Heian-kyō.
The divine authority shines across all borders of Japan, both great and small, benefiting all living beings, encouraging good and punishing evil, as we understand from venerating the divine oracle. Therefore, while we shall not discuss the unfathomable changes of heaven, earth, yin and yang for now, avoiding calamities from past karma and present self-inflicted disasters depends entirely on faith in Gongen's divine oracle.
**Oracle of Mount Atago Daigongen:**
"When sentient beings constantly defile the world's fire, harboring selfish thoughts and opposing heaven and earth, I always dispatch fire-chaos deities to burn away their impurities. When the upper classes are wealthy while the lower suffer, I rain fire upon their mansions, scattering the wealth of the rich to give to the suffering. Since I constantly protect royal law and guard national security, I burn down the houses of those with heretical views. Do not think of being satisfied in your heart. Heaven diminishes what is full, and I diminish human arrogance."
**Note:**
When people of the world venerate the sacred precincts of Ise of the divine wind and journey back, they must visit Gongen of this mountain, and there is a reason for this.
The Ise shrine is the deity of the sun and represents the origin of Japan (Hi-no-moto). This mountain is the deity of fire and represents the origin of fire. Since sun (hi) and fire (hi) are of the same nature and substance, those making pilgrimage to Ise, in reverence and respect for the clear blessings of Amaterasu's illuminating sun, should climb this mountain on their return journey to cleanse the dirty and defiled fire in their hearts. They should deeply pray for Gongen's protection, fear and respect the divine favor of the fire they use daily, not neglect even the smallest flame, purify the fire in their hearts, and visit to preserve and protect it eternally.
