吟味候間其旨可被相心得候右は松平
伊豆守殿ㇸ伺之上申達候由申来り
夫ゟ隣之御吟味相始数度罷出候
七月ニ至り広川力四郎入江九右衛門
中根源五右衛門土屋勝吾坂十郎左衛門
梶原勇三郎横山数馬高橋伴右衛門
八人呼出申来候ニ付私所存之趣紙
面相認柳生殿持参差出度此段
如何可仕哉紙面《見せ消ち：□｜添》相伺候所兼而
御手寄之御役人中ㇸ内坐致し教示を
得差出可然旨御差図ニ付御手寄之
衆中ㇸ罷越し夫々教示を受紙面
之趣は今度御吟味ニ付在所ゟ大勢
被召呼候《見せ消ち：□｜段》奉畏候然処主人御名
幼年之此節国元ゟ大勢被召呼候
段隣国へ相聞候而も不穏此段重役

御尋筋之儀は委皆私相弁罷在候儀
夫々御答可申上勿論右人別之内不行
届取計之御尤被仰付候儀御座候

吟味するので、その旨を心得ておくように。これについては松平伊豆守殿に伺いを立てた上で申し伝える旨を申し来た。それから厳しい吟味が始まり、数度出頭した。七月に至り、広川力四郎、入江九右衛門、中根源五右衛門、土屋勝吾、坂十郎左衛門、梶原勇三郎、横山数馬、高橋伴右衛門の八人が呼び出されてきたので、私の所存の趣旨を書面に認め、柳生殿に持参して差し出したいが、この件をどのようにすべきか書面で伺った所、かねてから頼りにしている御役人中に内々に相談して教示を得て差し出すのがよろしいとの御指図により、頼りにしている衆中のところに参り、それぞれ教示を受けた。書面の趣旨は、今度の吟味について在所から大勢が召し呼ばれた段、畏れ多いことである。しかしながら主人の御名が幼年のこの時節に、国元から大勢が召し呼ばれた段が隣国に聞こえても穏やかでない。この件について重役の者どもも甚だ心配している。人前の者に対する御尋ねの筋の儀は、すべて私が承知している儀であり、それぞれ御答え申し上げるのは勿論である。右の人別のうち不行き届きの取り計らいについて御尤もと仰せ付けられる儀がございます。

[They would] conduct an investigation, so [he should] keep this in mind. Regarding this matter, [they] said they would convey [the decision] after consulting with Lord Matsudaira Izu-no-kami. From then on, a strict investigation began, and [he] appeared several times. In the seventh month, eight people were summoned: Hirokawa Rikishirō, Irie Kuemon, Nakane Gengoemon, Tsuchiya Katsugo, Saka Jūrozaemon, Kajiwara Yūzaburō, Yokoyama Kazuma, and Takahashi Banemon. I wished to write down my thoughts and bring them to Lord Yagyū for submission, so I inquired in writing about how to proceed with this matter. The instruction was that it would be best to consult privately with the trusted officials and obtain their guidance before submitting. Following this guidance, I visited the trusted group of officials and received instruction from each. The content of the written statement was: regarding this investigation, many people have been summoned from the countryside, which is indeed awe-inspiring. However, at this time when our lord's name is [associated with] youth, the fact that many have been summoned from the home domain may create unease even if neighboring domains hear of it. The senior retainers are also greatly concerned about this matter. Regarding the inquiries directed at those in positions of responsibility, I am fully aware of all such matters and will naturally provide answers to each inquiry. Among the aforementioned individuals, there are matters where inadequate handling has been quite reasonably pointed out.
