漢名：玫瑰花（まいかいか）
和名：ハマナス
蛮名（西洋名）：ロウザ（Rosa）
この樹は、どこにでも、海浜にも共に生育する。五・六月に花が咲き、花びらや葉、おしべの芳香は数十里にわたって漂う。砂地に根を張って育ち、牡丹や芍薬をも凌ぐほどで、蝦夷地における清らかな景観の一つである。七月には精霊を祭る際に仏陀への供物として用いられる。この実が紅く熟すると、日本（本邦）では柿や白茄子（しろなす）を供物に用いるのと同様に用いられる。また、花錦ネズミをはじめ、様々なネズミ類がこの実を大変好んで食べる。土地の人々（和人）もまた食べ、「ハマナシ（浜梨）」とも呼んでいる。アイヌの人々は「ハマウニ」と称するが、これは「ハマナシ」が転訛したものである。

This shrub grows everywhere, including along coastal shores. It blooms in May and June, and the fragrance of its petals, leaves, and stamens drifts for dozens of ri. It grows by pushing its roots into sandy soil, surpassing even tree peonies and herbaceous peonies in beauty, and is one of the most splendid sights in the Ezo region. In July, it is used as an offering to the Buddha during the Festival of Spirits (Obon). When its fruits ripen red, they are used in this region much as persimmons or white eggplants are used as offerings elsewhere. Furthermore, the hanadori mouse (flower brocade mouse) and various other mice are particularly fond of eating these fruits. Local (Japanese settler) people also eat them, calling the plant "Hamanashi" (Beach Pear). The Ainu people call it "Hamauni," which is a corruption of "Hamanashi."
