鯨組を始めようとするならば、まず第一に地の利を選ぶべきである。うまく地の利を得た場合には、労力が少なくして鯨を多く獲ることができ、利益は自ずと大きくなる。地の利を得られない場合には、むだに費用ばかりがかさんで鯨を獲ることは少なく、利益はもとより少ない。それゆえ、鯨組を立ち上げるには、場所を選ぶことが極めて肝要である。場所の選び方としては、まず第一に鯨が多く往来する場所を選び、網を打つ場所を見定めること。
（割書き：背美鯨は水面近くを泳ぎ行くため、特に網を打つ場所を選ぶには及ばず、どこでも網を打てばよい。座頭鯨は海底深く潜って進む性質があるため、網の丈が届く程度の水深の場所を選んで、網を打つのに備える。）

If one intends to establish a whaling organization (kujira-gumi), the first priority must be to select a favorable location. When one successfully secures an advantageous location, whales can be caught in great numbers with little labor, and profits will naturally be abundant. When one fails to secure an advantageous location, expenses are wasted in vain, few whales are caught, and profits are naturally meager. Therefore, in establishing a whaling organization, the selection of the site is of the utmost importance. As for how to select a site: first and foremost, one should choose a location where whales frequently pass, and identify a place to set the nets.
(Interlinear note: Since the right whale [semі-kujira] swims close to the water's surface, there is no particular need to select a special location for setting nets — one may set nets wherever the whale is found. Since the humpback whale [zatō-kujira] dives deep toward the sea floor and travels along the bottom, one should select a location shallow enough that the height of the nets can reach, and prepare to set the nets there.)
