A Brief Commentary on the Diagrams of the Six Types of Mandala Honored Deities, Emblems, Mudras, etc. from the First Chapter of the "Vajraśekhara Sarvatathāgata-tattvasaṃgraha-mahāyāna-abhisaṃbodhi-mahākalparāja Sūtra" 〈Together with the Collected Essentials of Secret Mantras, Volume and Preface〉 Generally speaking, bodhisattvas of the three periods who sit at the bodhi-place and are about to inherit the Buddha's position cannot attain the Pure Land unless the yoga assembly goes to witness and confirm their attainment. Since the Great Teaching flowed eastward and was transmitted through masters, verses arose according to their wisdom. Each generation had such persons, some ordinary beings and some sages. The sages each adhered to the Three Vehicles, while ordinary beings could only roughly explain the truth based on the written texts. In the early Kaiyuan period, when the True Teaching King had not yet been transmitted to China, there was Master Śubhakarasiṃha Tripiṭaka who came to establish karmic connections in this land. Having traversed dangerous paths to come here, he was thoroughly versed in yoga and carried with him over 100,000 verses of sūtra texts, with none failing to accompany him personally. He had audience with the emperor, refreshed hearts, saved sentient beings, penetrated their nature, created paintings and images, and compiled mantras. These were brilliantly observable, and those who received them invariably protected them, though the entire world could not witness them. For eighty years, through the protection of holy power, they did not fall into decline. During the time when Śubhakarasiṃha was propagating the teaching, Master Vajrabodhi Tripiṭaka came floating across the sea. He deeply mastered the true school of yoga and completely penetrated the supreme principles of the vajra. The sūtra teachings he brought were roughly the same as those who came from the west. When he was about to land on these shores, sudden winds arose and stirred up raging waves. The ship's master attended to his vessel, lifting up various precious gems, while sūtras became mixed together with trade goods. During the time of turbulent waves, they similarly encountered the calamity of abandonment. When the two great masters met, they were as intimate as if bonded with glue. When they discussed the essential teachings, they harmonized as if matching talismans, and there were wondrous things.
