The dyeing of court robes called "*ebi-zome*" refers to dyeing them the color of ripened grapes. Grapes are found throughout the provinces, but those produced in Kōshū (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture) are considered the finest. In late spring, buds emerge from old vines. The leaves resemble those of Boston ivy (*chikkin* / *tsuta*). The flower clusters grow between the leaves as the buds extend. The flowers are extremely small and pale yellow in color, and the fruit develops accordingly. The fruit is initially green but turns purplish-black upon ripening, with a sweet and delicious flavor. This is called *kuro-budō* (black grape). This corresponds to the "purple grape" (*shifudō*) mentioned in the *Shakumyō*, the "black crystal" (*kokusuishō*) in the *Seijitsū*, and the "bestowed-purple grape" (*shishibudō*) in the *Gunhōfu*. This variety is a famous product of Ryūkyū (present-day Okinawa). There is also another variety whose fruit is purple and somewhat elongated in shape.
