　○『本草記聞』に曰く：湖水中、あるいは海辺の沼に生育し、大きさは一尺ほど。外側の色は黒く、内側は緑色に光って白い。古くなると外皮が虫に食われたようにはげて白い部分が現れる。それゆえ「絵介（ヱカキ介）」と呼ぶ。下品であって食用には供しない。

　○『物類品隲』に曰く：和名をヱカヒ、またカラスカヒ、またヱカキカヒとも言う。考えるに、「蚌（ぼう）」は蛤の類で長い貝の総称であるが、本草書で「蚌」と指すものはヱカヒのことである。琵琶湖産のものには大きいもので七・八寸余りのものがある。

　○『啓蒙』に曰く：黒い皮の内側に白い粉がある。厚く、その内部は甚だ堅硬で、色は白く、わずかに青紫を帯びて光沢がある。年を経たものは黒皮が斑なく禿げ削られて白い粉が現れ、虫が刻んだ篆字のようである。その模様が両殻に等しく現れることから、ヱカヒ・ヱカキカヒと呼ぶ。

　○石寿曰く：すなわち土負介（どふかい）の大きなものを指す。形はやや異なる。片方の袖（翼部）は丸く短く、片方の袖は長く先が尖っている。片方の耳（耳状突起）には角がある。殻は厚く、烏帽子の形をしている。それゆえ「烏帽子」の名がある。鼻のあたりは黒皮が厚く、唐金色あるいは銀光を見せ、あるいは花のような様子を呈することがある。肌は黒色で赤色を帯び、また鈍い褐色あるいは灰白色の泥錆が横縞のように付いているものもある。質は横縞が粗く交じり、大理石状の模様があり、光沢がある。裏は水白色または水褐色の斑模様があって、生䗯介（せいじゅかい）または石決明のような光沢がある。また一種は、片方の袖が丸く、片方の袖は少し長く先が細く短い。前に述べたものと比べると丸いものである。概して蛤青の黒色のものであろう。形は三・四寸以上のものである。

○ According to the *Honzō Kibun* (Notes on Materia Medica): This shell grows in lake waters or in coastal marshes. It reaches about one foot (shaku) in length. The outside is black, while the inside shines greenish and appears white. As the shell ages, the outer skin becomes pitted and worn as if eaten by insects, exposing white areas beneath. It is for this reason that it is called "Ekaki-kai" (the Shell That Draws Pictures). It is of inferior quality and not used as food.

○ The *Butsurui Hinshitsu* (Classification of Natural Objects) states: In Japanese it is called Ekahi, also Karasu-kahi (Crow Shell), and also Ekaki-kahi. Upon reflection, the Chinese character 蚌 (*bō*) is a general term for elongated bivalves of the clam type, but the specific shell referred to as 蚌 in the herbals is the Ekahi. Specimens from Lake Biwa can exceed seven or eight *sun* (approximately 21–24 cm) in length.

○ The *Kaimō* (Enlightenment/Illustrated Guide) states: Inside the black outer skin there is white powder; it is thick. The interior is extremely hard, white in color, tinged with a faint blue-purple, and has a lustrous sheen. In older specimens, the black skin becomes mottled and worn away, exposing the white powder beneath in patterns resembling characters carved by insects. Because these patterns appear equally on both shells, it is called Ekahi or Ekaki-kahi.

○ Sekiju states: This refers to large specimens of the Dofu-kai (土負介). The shape differs slightly. One wing (flange) is rounded and short, the other wing is long with a pointed tip. One ear (auricle) has an angular projection. The shell is thick and has the appearance of an eboshi (nobleman's court cap), hence the name "Eboshi." Around the beak (umbo), the black skin is thick and exhibits a bronze-gold or silver luster, sometimes presenting an appearance like flowers. The surface is black with a reddish tinge; some specimens have dull brown or grayish-white mud-rust deposits arranged in horizontal stripes. The texture has coarse horizontal striations mixed throughout, with a marbled pattern and a polished luster. The interior is water-white or water-brown with mottled patterns, with a luster resembling that of the Seiju-kai (生䗯介) or the Abalone (石決明 / *Haliotis*). There is also a variant in which one wing is rounded and the other wing is slightly longer, with a narrow, short tip — compared to the specimens described above, this variety is more rounded in form. It may generally be a blackish variant of the *Hamaguri ao* (蛤青). The shell reaches three to four *sun* (approximately 9–12 cm) or more in size.
