四ツ時比より信州水内郡遠近大地震ありし
場所をくわしくたつぬるに先善光寺を初め
堂塔からん末社寺院其外人家おひたヾし并
川々は洪水し里々は出火し人馬の損亡多く
東は丹波嶋川田松代屋代戸倉坂木上田此辺

現代語訳

このような目出たい御代（みよ）であるにもかかわらず、天変地異によってどうにもならない事態が起きた。ここに、弘化四年未年（1847年）三月二十四日の夜、四つ時（午後10時）頃より、信州水内郡の遠近にわたって大地震があった。

被害のあった場所を詳しく調べると、まず善光寺をはじめとして、堂塔・末社・寺院、その他の人家が夥しく（被害を受け）、さらに川々は洪水となり、里々では火災が起き、人馬の死傷が多く出た。

東は丹波島・川田・松代・屋代・戸倉・坂木・上田あたりで、特に激しく揺れ、街道筋では大石などが道に崩れ出し、大地もひび割れるようであった。

ここで不思議なことは、善光寺如来のことである。そもそも信濃国の善光寺は、本多善光が開いたとされ、霊験あらたかなことは世に知れ渡っているが、今回の大地震においては、境内はもちろんのこと、新田町・後丁・大門町・西権堂丁・岩石桜小路・西門丁・東門の左右にわたって広く揺れ崩れ、騒動はただならぬものがあったにもかかわらず、本堂は少しも破損することなく、御堂に籠もっていた者たちには怪我人が一人もいなかったのは、ひとえに世尊（仏様）の霊のご加護によるものであろうと、諸人が深く感じ入ったのであった。

さて、越後路の方は、井戸橋より押鏡村・吉田宿・荒町宿・田子村・吉村・平出村・三本松村・牟礼宿・大古間宿・小古間宿・柏原宿・黒姫山・野尻宿・関川宿等である。この地は信濃と越後の国境であり、関川の御関所がある。そこより越後の国中山二宿をはじめとして、同国高田あたりまでも被害を受けた。

右の場所より、また上州口（群馬方面）の方は、小諸・追分宿・沓掛宿・軽井沢宿・碓氷の御関所であり、この地が信濃と上野の国境である。

南は稲荷山宿・青柳宿・会田宿・刈谷原宿・岡田宿・松本あたりで、これもまた格別に激しく揺れ、人家等が多く焼失して、その……（続く）

Despite this being such an auspicious and prosperous reign, a great natural disaster occurred that could not be helped. On the night of the 24th day of the 3rd month of Kōka 4 (1847), the Year of the Sheep, around the hour of the Yotsu (approximately 10 p.m.), a great earthquake struck near and far across Mizuuchi District in Shinano Province.

Upon detailed investigation of the affected areas, first and foremost Zenkōji Temple, along with its pagodas, subsidiary shrines, affiliated temples, and a great many private residences were damaged. The rivers flooded, fires broke out in villages throughout the region, and there were many casualties among both people and horses.

To the east, the areas of Tanbashima, Kawada, Matsushiro, Yashiro, Togura, Sakaki, and Ueda were particularly severely struck. Large boulders rolled out onto the roads, and the very ground seemed to split open.

What is most wondrous, however, is the matter of the Zenkōji Nyorai (the sacred Buddha image of Zenkōji). Zenkōji Temple in Shinano Province was founded by Honda Yoshimitsu (Zenkō), and its miraculous powers are known throughout the world. Yet in this great earthquake, despite the widespread destruction throughout the temple precinct and the surrounding areas of Nitta-chō, Ushiro-chō, Daimon-chō, Nishi Gondō-chō, Iwashi Sakura-kōji, Nishimon-chō, and both sides of Higashimon—where there was terrible turmoil—the main hall suffered not the slightest damage, and not one of those who had taken refuge within the hall was injured. People everywhere felt deeply that this could only be due to the divine protection of the World-Honored One (the Buddha).

Furthermore, along the Echigo route, the affected areas extended from Idobashi through Oshikagami Village, Yoshida-juku, Aramachi-juku, Tago Village, Yoshi Village, Hiraide Village, Sanbon-matsu Village, Mure-juku, Ōkoma-juku, Kokoma-juku, Kashiwabara-juku, Mt. Kurohime, Nojiri-juku, and Sekikawa-juku. This area marks the border between Shinano and Echigo Provinces, where the Sekikawa checkpoint (barrier gate) is located. From there, damage extended to the two stations of Nakayama in Echigo Province and as far as the Takada area in the same province.

From these areas, moving toward the Jōshū (Kōzuke/Gunma) entrance, the affected places include Komoro, Oiwake-juku, Kutsukake-juku, Karuizawa-juku, and the Usui checkpoint, which marks the border between Shinano and Kōzuke Provinces.

To the south, Inariyama-juku, Aoyagi-juku, Aida-juku, Kariyagahara-juku, Okada-juku, and the Matsumoto area were also especially badly shaken, with many residences burning down, and… (continues)
