現代語訳
○門前（もんぜん） 畑下戸（はたおり）の西に位置し、塩竈から本道を七、八町ほど過ぎたところにある。入口の道端には二つの浴槽の温泉があり、自楽房湯と称している。続いて下湯、河原湯があり、合わせて四つの浴場がある。《割書：効能の概要は巻末にある》家数は十四戸で、半分は物品を商う店である。旅館は和泉屋、福田屋、畳屋、松本屋、関東屋、山口屋の六戸で、戸長役場があり、郵便局もある。この山中にあって都合の良い場所であろう。道の北側には、前栃木県令の三島君の別荘の敷地があり、数十間の間、方形に石垣を築き、さらに西北の隅に一段高く同様の石垣を築いている。
ああ、昨日まで馬の足も立たないような山中に、貴顕の方々が次々と別邸を構え、荘園を設けるのは、道路開削の功績でなくして何であろうか。この辺りは山があっても軒先に迫らず、川があっても塵を流さない。川を隔てた山田は段々に重なり、姨捨の月を移したような風景は言葉では表現できないほど美しい。また、この地域内には妙雲寺という

○Monzen (Gate-front area): Located to the west of Hataori, about seven to eight chō past Shiokama along the main road. At the roadside of the entrance, there are two hot spring baths called Jirakubō-yu. Following these are Shimo-yu and Kawara-yu, making a total of four baths. {{Note: A summary of their medicinal properties is provided at the end of the volume}} There are fourteen households, half of which are shops selling various goods. The inns are Izumiya, Fukudaya, Tatamiya, Matsumotoya, Kantōya, and Yamaguchiya - six establishments in total. There is a village headman's office and a post office, making this a convenient location within these mountains. On the north side of the road lies the estate grounds of the former Tochigi prefectural governor, Lord Mishima. Stone walls have been constructed in a square formation spanning several dozen ken, with another tier of similar stone walls built one level higher in the northwest corner.
Ah! In these mountains where until yesterday not even a horse's hoof could find footing, distinguished gentlemen are successively building villas and establishing estates - surely this is nothing other than the achievement of road construction! In this vicinity, though there are mountains, they do not press close to the eaves; though there are rivers, they do not carry away dust.
