Events were correlated to days, days to months, months to seasons, and seasons to years, and all celestial disasters, earthly upheavals, and anomalies among insects, grasses, and trees were recorded in order to serve as warnings. Among the sages of antiquity, there was none who did not follow this Way (the study of astronomy and calendrical science). From the Three Dynasties (Xia, Shang, and Zhou) onward, among the various Confucian scholars such as Dong Zhongshu, Liu Xiang, Cai Yong, Guo Xiang, Cheng (Hao and Yi), Zhang (Zai), Shao (Yong), and Zhu (Xi), there was none who did not discuss astronomy and measure calendrical numbers. After Qi Bo, the great physicians such as Yu Fu, Lei Gong, Bian Que, Cang Gong, Liu (Wansu), Zhang (Zhongjing), Zhu (Danxi), and Li (Dongyuan) were all versed in astronomy, studied and calculated celestial movements, and thoroughly investigated medicine and medical treatments.
This being so, both the Confucian scholars and the physicians must, above all, devote their minds to this field of learning. How much more so for the ruler who governs the world in accordance with Heaven. Now, an enlightened sovereign reigns on high; the seas raise no waves, the Seven Wefts (the seven planets) move in their proper courses and inauspicious vapors dissipate, the Five Stars are in harmony and rain and sunshine follow in due season. Even the military officials, in their leisure from archery and horsemanship, all esteem letters and love learning, and there is none who does not diligently practice the teachings of filial piety, fraternal love, loyalty, and faithfulness. The refinement of scholarly customs may truly be said to surpass all previous ages. At that time, particular importance was placed on the calendar, and officials were appointed to mark the divisions of hours and record the seasonal nodes. Therefore, scholars were not confused about seasonal indicators, and furthermore——
