【One】
Love's path brings nothing but ruin to one's life—
In the second block of Hongō,
Here is the life story of Oshichi, daughter of the greengrocer.
【Two】
Embers fall like rain at Maruyama;
Their house burns to the ground — the greengrocer Kyūbei
Finds temporary lodging at Kisshoji Temple in Komagome.
【Three】
Three-leaf herbs for Kichisa — with spinach,
Carrots, and sansho pepper, dried gourd strips laid upon them—
Her heart's wish: to become his bride.
【Four】
Unseen by others' eyes, at the temple school,
Nestled close, she clings like a young myōga shoot—
A sixteen-year-old girl, ready to burst like a bean.
【Five】
With wholehearted devotion, in her maiden heart,
She worships Kichisa as both god and Buddha—
Morning and night she bows within her breast.
【Six】
The ridge-raising ceremony done, the rebuilding complete—
"I must return to Hongō now,"
"Please stay well — do not grieve."
【Seven】
Weeping as they part, her long-sleeved kimono,
Her trailing hair pulled back toward Kichisa—
How could she ever bring herself to go home?
【Eight】
Rather than selling shiitake and dried gourd at the greengrocer's,
Longing to taste Kichisa's "matsutake" mushroom—
"If I burn down our house, surely we can meet again."
【Nine】
She wraps a glowing coal from the kotatsu in a quick bundle,
And secretly throws it onto the wooden eaves—
The sparks spread and catch fire in all four directions.
【Ten】
Flames leap and spread from block to block across the town;
In all eight directions rings the urgent evening bell—
In her heart too, a rapid pounding like a warning bell.

【Eleven】
She is discovered by the spiteful Takebei;
Her love will never be fulfilled — exposed like a charlatan—
She is reported to the authorities for arson.
【Twelve】
Suddenly, Oshichi is arrested;
Dragged before the magistrate's office, kneeling on the gravel—
"I am sixteen, born in the year of Hinoe-Uma."
【Thirteen】
The sentence is passed — there is no appeal;
Brought forth from Tenma-chō prison,
Before her: a notice board, paper banners rising.
【Fourteen】
Dressed in white, long-sleeved kimono, prayer beads at her neck,
The nenbutsu on her lips, tears in her eyes—
Paraded through the eight hundred and eight districts of Edo.
【Fifteen】
Prayers for her salvation in the next life from onlookers,
Who send her off with tears and nembutsu chanting—
Soon she arrives at Shibaguchi, the execution grounds of Oten-yama.
【Sixteen】
At the crossroads where the Six Realms meet, at the notice-board junction,
Eighteen blocks of Takanawa pass like a dream—
She cannot cross Shinagawa — she reaches Suzugamori.
【Seventeen】
On all sides stand rows of bamboo fencing, strictly guarded;
Piles of brushwood and reeds — a terrifying sight—
Poor Oshichi is bound to the stake.
【Eighteen】
As the flames blaze up with a sudden burst,
Kichisa forces his way through the crowd of onlookers—
A parting of one lifetime, with deepest reverence.
【Nineteen】
Even in her agony, she feels joy:
"I will wait for you in the next world, Kichisa—"
Her last moment, together as one — a farewell to this world.
【Twenty】
To all the daughters throughout the land of Japan:
Be sure never to commit such mischief—
A warning against frivolity, a lesson for the world.
