下田をきゆられにけりな、おろしや船、みなよい君と人のいふまで

This document is a comic parody (dōke) of the classical anthology of the "Thirty-Six Poetry Immortals" (Sanjūrokkasen), in which each poet's famous waka poem has been humorously rewritten to comment on a major earthquake disaster (most likely the Ansei Edo Earthquake of 1855). Each entry gives the poet's name, a comic parody verse in colloquial language, followed by the original classical waka poem in【】brackets.

## Column 1

**Taira no Kanemori**

*Parody:* "The port of Shimoda has been opened by the Russian ships — everyone says, 'What a fine lord we have,' until the people say so."

*Original waka:* Though I tried to hide it, my love showed in my face — as if asking 'Are you troubled by something?' until people said so.

**Kanke (Sugawara no Michizane)**

*Parody:* "This time around, the carpenters are making a mountain of gold — rushing through the work at their posts as fast as they can."

*Original waka:* On this journey I could not even prepare an offering — at Tamukeyama, may the brocade of autumn leaves serve as my offering to the gods.

*Parody:* "Thinking another tremor will come, people have made their preparations and sit waiting."

*Parody:* "The places deserving of pity are spread everywhere — how troubling, with houses collapsed all around."

*Original waka:* I cannot think of anyone who would say 'how pitiful' — so it seems my life shall come to nothing.

*Parody:* "Even as I lament and pray to gods and buddhas, at times like this they simply do not listen."

*Original waka:* Does the moon command me to grieve and brood? My tears seem to reproach, as if blaming something else.

**Sutoku-in (Emperor Sutoku)**

*Parody:* "The fence-boat was smashed on the rocks in the swift current — from now on I have decided not to board one again."

*Original waka:* Because the river runs fast, split apart on the rocks of the rapids — yet I intend that in the end we shall meet again.

*Parody:* "As I gaze at everything collapsed and swept away, I must long for my own home."

*Original waka:* The springs of Mika Plain gush and flow — when did I ever see you, that I should feel such longing?

*Parody:* "Slowly even the autumn town withers away — people must be saying the mountains too have shaken from the earthquake."

*Original waka:* Because it blows so forcefully that the grasses and trees of autumn wither — indeed, that is why we call the mountain wind a 'storm.'

*Parody:* "Even the life I thought not worth keeping for your sake — in this earthquake it has taken flight and fled."

*Parody:* "Sighing, all the actors and entertainers have ceased work — how long a thing it is, this they know full well."

*Parody:* "Rather than enduring such anger and grief while fleeing — if only there were a way to speak directly to each person."

*Original waka:* Now I only wish there were a way to tell you directly, not through a messenger — that I have resolved to bear this grief no more.

*Parody:* "Fleeing to the mountain tops — when things settle down, I shall come back again."

*Original waka:* Parting from you, if you hear I am waiting like the pines on the peaks of Mount Inaba — I will come back to you right away.

*Parody:* "What can I say — even Mount Futago has gone wild, with boulders rolling down. If only there were a way to get through."

*Original waka:* Since I am the one — if only I could come to you by way of the arrowroot vines of Mount Ōsaka, without anyone knowing.

*Parody:* "Collapsed and prostrate in the middle of the road from the great earthquake — the ground has opened up, though it is not my doing."

*Original waka:* The patterned cloth of Michinoku — for whose sake did it begin to be disordered? Not by my hand.

*Parody:* "Rushing out in one's leggings and an old undergarment — what a tremendously powerful earthquake it was!"

*Original waka:* At the ancient palace, in the ferns growing on the old eaves — there is a past that goes beyond even that.
